About the Organisation

As a program of Upper Murray Family Care, the Hume Riverina Community Legal Service is a non-government, community-managed program offering a range of quality services that are responsive to the varying needs of communities extending from the cities of Albury, Wodonga, Wangaratta and Benalla to townships throughout the Towong, Mansfield, Alpine, Indigo shires, as well as 10 additional LGA's through the Southern Riverina of NSW.

We now have an incredibly rewarding opportunity for a skilled Lawyer to join a compassionate team of professionals who are dedicated to supporting individuals and who want to make a difference in the lives of people.

Your Next Opportunity

Drawing on a strong network of providers and stakeholders (such as the Women's Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Scheme [WDVCAS]), you will work collaboratively within a supportive team to deliver a holistic suite of vital legal services to women experiencing or at risk of domestic and family violence in regional NSW with not only family law and domestic violence matters but also other and often related issues which may include ADVOs, housing, debt and victims services.

You'll also be provided with training and development opportunities to ensure you feel empowered to provide a thorough and trauma-informed service to our clients. This will involve shadowing some of our existing lawyers before being put out in to the field, so you can see first-hand how our team assists individuals in accessing life-changing services.

  • Providing information, legal advice, referrals and ongoing casework
  • Attending the local courts in Deniliquin, Finley and Corowa to provide pre and post-court advice and assistance
  • Providing community legal education, secondary consultations and professional development to key stakeholders
  • Undertaking community development and law reform/advocacy
  • Working in a collaborative and holistic way with WDVCAS and other key stakeholders to meet the complex needs of clients

What You'll Bring to the Team

To be considered for this role, you must hold tertiary legal qualifications and be eligible for a practising certificate in Victoria. You will draw on your experience in advice and casework in the areas of family and civil law to provide high-quality legal services to individuals throughout the region.

To thrive in this role, you'll be a compassionate individual with a warm demeanour and a genuine commitment to supporting those who have been affected by domestic and family violence. You'll have a high-level of emotional intelligence that enables you to engage with members of the community in an empathetic manner, and your highly developed communication skills will see you in good stead to disseminate relevant information to stakeholders and clients alike.

As many of our clients have experienced past trauma, highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to provide legal services in an empathetic and trauma-informed manner will be paramount.

Other requirements include:

  • A satisfactory Victorian and NSW Working with Children Check
  • A satisfactory Police Check
  • Current driver's licence
  • Evidence of Covid19 Vaccination 1 &2
