Melbourne Project 614 offers crisis support and intervention, information, practical assistance and importantly, ongoing support for people in crisis. The Twilight Café builds upon the existing daytime Lighthouse Café operation by providing a welcoming, safe and inclusive place and building relationships with men and women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in the City of Melbourne.

The Café sees a range of different people accessing the service, including people who suffer from drug and alcohol addictions, mental health and general health issues, homelessness, living in boarding houses and rooming houses, asylum seekers and even international students.

The Twilight Café program provides an opportunity for social and recreational activities, as well as a dinner served each night. Based at 69 Bourke Street Melbourne, the Twilight Café operates from 5.00pm-7.00pm, 7 days a week. Staff are onsite from 3.00pm-11.00pm, preparing for and cleaning up after the evening meal, and conducting some outreach close to the Cafe.

About the role

We are seeking a resilient, compassionate and values-driven Twilight Outreach and Cafe Worker to engage with vulnerable people inside and outside of the café, linking them to all of the activities provided by Project 614. This role is responsible for the running of the Café, customer/client management, oversight of volunteers and conducting outreach to referral locations in the City of Melbourne. This work is to encourage people experiencing homelessness to attend the Café for further support and referrals.

You will successfully

  • Ensure clients are treated with empathy, dignity and respect
  • Ensuring client behaviour is managed effectively and appropriately to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all attendees
  • Ensure resources and referral information is current and up-to-date, meeting client trends/needs
  • Liaison with the 24/7 Homelessness Team, Lighthouse Day Café and Street Teams to ensure specialist support can be engaged
  • Showers, bathrooms and laundry in the café are maintained to a high level of cleanliness
  • Coordinate set-up ensuring meals/beverages are served and presented in a professional and timely manner.
  • Monitor food stock and report to Kitchen as required
  • Back-of-house areas are maintained to a high standard, compliant with Food Safety standards
  • All Twilight Café volunteers (community members, individuals and corporates) are coordinated effectively in liaison with the Melbourne Project 614 Volunteer Coordinator

We currently have part-time positions available, maximum term to 30 April 2024. We are seeking suitable applicants who are available to work 2, 3 or 4 nights (max) a week. Shift hours are (approximately) 3.00pm to 11pm each night. Salary and conditions are in accordance with the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award, Level 3.

What you have

  • A tertiary qualification in community services/social work and/or related disciplines (desirable)
  • Experience within community services (desirable)
  • Experience working effectively with vulnerable people who exhibit multiple/complex service needs and/or are chronically disadvantaged
  • Excellent time management, planning and organisational skills
  • A current VIC Drivers Licence
  • Valid VIC Employee Working with Children Check
  • Ability to provide proof of Eligibility to Work in Australia

The Salvation Army is subject to public health orders. You may be required to provide evidence of vaccine status dependent on requirements.
