What are we looking for?
The Treaty Authority seeks an experienced Senior Lawyer to join our Lore and Law team. In this role, you will support the General Counsel by providing strategic legal advice across all areas of the Authority’s operations, and work alongside the Agreement Making team to support the Treaty Authority’s functions in relation to Treaty negotiations.
What you need to succeed:
- A demonstrated ability to provide strategic, risk-based, legal advice on a wide range of legal, regulatory, legislative and corporate governance matters.
- Ability to confidently draft contracts, agreements and policies and interpret and advise on legislation and other legal documents.
- Recognised capability for providing culturally considerate and accessible legal advice.
- Proven ability to identify and manage legal risks and contribute to the Authority’s strategic direction.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
About the Treaty Authority
The Treaty Authority is an independent entity with a mandate to facilitate the formation of treaties between the State of Victoria and First Peoples in Victoria.
The Treaty Authority’s work is grounded in Aboriginal culture, lore and law and led collectively by a panel of five Members committed to Aboriginal self-determination and empowerment. It engages with a broad cross-section of stakeholders including the State of Victoria, the First Peoples’ Assembly and Traditional Owners in Victoria.
The objects of the Treaty Authority’s work are to:
- Facilitate the journey towards reconciliation, mutual respect and tolerance between First Peoples and other people of the State and
- Maintain, promote and advance the self-determination and empowerment, culture and human rights of First Peoples.
What you’ll bring:
- Law degree with 5+ years of post-admission experience.
- Eligible for, or holder of, a practicing certificate in an Australian State or Territory.
- Experience in areas such as Indigenous legal issues, public/administrative law, dispute resolution or human rights law.
- In-house legal experience is preferred but not essential.
- Broad legal knowledge, and exceptional legal judgement and analytical skills.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex legal concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
- Outstanding interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Proven leadership capabilities with a collaborative approach.
- Experience engaging with Aboriginal communities and organisations in Victoria.
- Passionate about contributing to reforms benefiting First Peoples in Victoria.
- Highly adaptable, proactive, and resilient in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong initiative, self-motivation, and ability to work effectively under pressure.
