Subiaco Justice Centre Inc
The Subiaco Justice Centre Inc (SJC) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that provides legal services to disadvantaged members of the community. The Centre offers General and Family legal services by volunteer lawyers supported by law students. There is also a part-time Principal Solicitor who assists clients and oversees the legal practice.SJC clients are generally ineligible for legal aid, other community legal services or who are unable to afford the services of a private lawyer. They are means-tested to qualify for appointments. They include individuals on low incomes, homeless or on the verge of homelessness, living with a disability, indigenous and people of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Role Overview
Committee Members of the Subiaco Justice Centre are integral to the governance of the organisation.
They work to uphold the values of the Centre and advance its mission of providing access to justice. Members collaborate to ensure good governance, set strategic directions, and oversee the work of the General Manager and Principal Lawyer to align the Centre’s activities with its mission and the needs of the community.
As an independently funded community legal centre, the Subiaco Justice Centre also relies on its Committee Members to engage in fundraising activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Set the tone of the organisation internally and externally, promoting access to justice and community engagement.
- Engage with a wide variety of stakeholders, including legal professionals, community members, and students, to promote the Centre’s work and encourage participation and to raise funds.
- Maintain positive working relationships both within the organisation and with external partners.
- Identify opportunities for the Centre to develop and grow.
- Actively participate in the Centre’s activities and contribute to the operations of the Committee.
- Support positive working relationships within the organisation.
- Contribute ideas for fundraising.
- Provide expertise in your area of knowledge to support organisational objectives.
Skills
- Financial or legal expertise with experience in a relevant setting.
- Understanding of the not-for-profit sector and challenges that can arise in relation to funding, support, service delivery, and advocacy.
- Confident in dealing with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Ability to work constructively as part of a team with volunteers and staff.
- Strong organisational skills.
- Sensitive to issues of confidentiality.
- Ability to direct operations as well as follow instructions.
- Commitment to governance best practices and willingness to comply with regulatory standards and relevant organisational policies.
Commitment
- Attend Committee meetings, currently scheduled every two months
- Participate in additional meetings or events as required
- Prepare for and contribute to strategic discussions and decision-making on an annual basis
- Approximate total commitment is between 2 - 5 hours per month
- Applicants seeking to serve for at least 2 years are preferred
