The Shepherd Centre (TSC) is a highly regarded not-for-profit, providing specialised programs for children with hearing loss and their families. Our programs meet the needs of children of all ages; from our world-leading early intervention program for babies and toddlers, through to our mentoring program ‘Hear for You’ for school-aged children and teenagers. We have been empowering generations of children with hearing loss to listen, speak and have a voice for over 50 years, creating a world of choice and amplifying possibility.

TSC currently supports over 900 families all over Australia, providing in-person and online support from 10 locations across NSW, ACT, Queensland and Tasmania. Our global platform HearHub, supports health professionals working with children with hearing loss all over the world.

About the Role

We are seeking a Financial Controller to lead The Shepherd Centre’s finance function and play a key role in supporting our continued growth and impact.

This pivotal role is responsible for delivering accurate and timely financial and management reports. It ensures strong internal controls are in place to maintain compliance with The Shepherd Centre’s policies, procedures, and legislative requirements. The role also oversees cashflow management and leads the annual budgeting and forecasting processes, including detailed variance analysis.

This is a permanent, full-time position (38 hours per week), opportunity for an experienced finance professional who is looking to make a meaningful contribution within a purpose-driven organisation.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Deliver accurate and timely financial and management reports with analysis for the Executive, FAR Committee, and Board
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes, including month-end, year-end, and external audits
  • Oversee invoicing, payroll, and compliance to maximise revenue and meet statutory obligations
  • Collaborate across teams to manage funding, pricing, and reporting for clinical services, grants, and donations
  • Manage cash flow, banking, and short-term investments to ensure liquidity and financial health
  • Maintain and improve financial systems, processes, and internal controls to meet legal and compliance standards
  • Lead and develop a small finance team, fostering performance, communication, and continuous improvement

Essential Criteria

  • Certified Practicing Accountant or Chartered Accountant
  • Demonstrated experience (typically 8+ years) in financial leadership roles
  • Legal right to work in Australia
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience building strong and productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Resilient and forward-thinking, with the courage to face challenges and find creative solutions
  • Advanced experience and competence in the use of the Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel, and capability to learn new systems quickly
