The Associate Director of Development (ADOD) works closely with the TNC Development teams in Australia, Oceania, the Asia Pacific Region, the US and Europe to coordinate and deliver effective multi-year strategies and plans for prospective and current donors, including corporates, foundations, and individuals. Equipped with these tools, the ADOD works closely with the Director of Development (Oceania) to secure the income needed to fund the Conservancy’s conservation work necessary to meet our 30x30 targets in Australia and abroad. They manage a portfolio of donors based in Australia to secure gifts, grants and pledges from high net worth individual, foundation and corporate donors (as well as possibly government agencies) who have the capacity to make transformational gifts towards TNC’s conservation priorities within Australia, as well as other strategic geographies around the world— with a focus on the Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Associate Director of Development (ADOD) is responsible for building, cultivating and stewarding a portfolio of qualified donors to secure income in support of TNC’s goals. They understand and apply the principles of developing strategies, relationship building and nurturing high-value, long-term donor engagement. They build collaborative relationships with conservation colleagues to share knowledge and program developments with donors to ultimately increase support. The ADOD will be responsible for building and managing a full donor pipeline including making direct asks to both global and local prospects and donors to meet organisational priorities as identified.
This role also includes liaising with appropriate partners in the field (i.e. across Oceania and the Asia-Pacific Region) and staff at the Worldwide Office, keeping them apprised of relevant developments, issues or concerns, and directing questions as appropriate. The ADOD will be required to work within the Conservancy’s donor database and to participate in the development and presentation of plans, proposals and reports. They may undertake prospect research. They may also be responsible for volunteer engagement within formal and/or informal networks. They may organise strategic events to steward current donors and cultivate new prospect.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
- Manage a portfolio of 75 – 125 donors, including donors with the capacity to give over $1,000,000.
- Build donor engagement through activation including 125 visits and 275 moves annually.
- Maintain prospect and donor records on TNC’s CRM, keeping records updated in a timely manner.
- Annual fundraising goal of $1,000,000 or more.
- Act independently and in supervisor’s stead as needed, exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
- Work in the understanding that decisions may have program-wide impact and may bind the organization financially or legally.
- Demonstrate sensitivity and follow best practice in handling confidential information.
- Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures and external (philanthropic sector/legal/IRS) requirements.
- Meet financial responsibilities by working within a budget and meeting fundraising objectives.
- Work collaboratively and supportively when engaging with people both internal and external to TNC, adhering to our values at all times.
- Manage assigned projects, coordinating the work of peers and meeting deadlines.

- Travel frequently and on short notice, including to remote areas with donors and work long and flexible hours as needed.
- Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree and 5 years related experience or an equivalent combination.
- Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with donors, especially in the high net wealth cohort.
- Experience in asking for and closing gifts of $100,000 or more and a history of raising $1,000,000 or more in one year.
- Experience in creating, managing and tracking multiple relationships and plans for prospects and donors.
- Experience distilling complex information and writing donor-friendly proposals and reports.
- Experience presenting organisation information to audiences on-line and in-person.
- Experience working in donor databases and maintaining data integrity.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams.
- Experience, coursework, or other training in fundraising principles and practices.
- Experience in negotiating high profile or sensitive agreements.
- Fluent in English language.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to determine an individual’s interests, capacity and potential for helping the Conservancy meet its goals, and act appropriately to tie those interests with the Conservancy’s work.
- Ability to organise quality donor events.
- Knowledge of current trends in the charitable giving in the areas of capital campaigns, philanthropic giving in Australia and major gifts.
- Member of Fundraising Institute Australia.
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Interest and/or experience in conservation, environmental protection and/or the natural world.
- Experience working in large and/or multi-national organisations.
- Demonstrated experience using listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate donors and volunteers.
- Proven ability to negotiate high profile or sensitive agreements.
- Working knowledge of the basics of charitable gift planning
- Ability to implement and manage fundraising plans, including individualised cultivation, solicitation and recognition plans.
- Knowledge of current trends in the charitable giving in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts or planned giving.
