Overall Function

The Senior Manager for Health Equity will work across EDF’s Mission teams to apply a health equity lens to EDF’s major global initiatives, helping lead to more equitable and effective outcomes. Initiatives include the global energy transition; global clean air; climate smart water; and climate smart agriculture. The position is housed within EDF’s Justice and Equity team, reporting to the Director for Just Policy Solutions, and will collaborate extensively across EDF. The Senior Manager for Health Equity will serve as an internal advisor to EDF teams, advocating for and advancing health equity across EDF’s initiatives, and will also represent EDF externally as a subject matter expert in health equity.

Key Responsibilities

Primary activities include:

  • Advise on the development of programmatic and strategic directions for health-equity related work across the organisation.
  • Collaborate with scientists and other experts organisation-wide to identify, execute, and coordinate research and analysis critical to justice and equity priorities.
  • Provide justice and equity related guidance, mentorship, and thought partnership through coordination and effective communication with EDF staff and consultants across multiple initiatives; collaborate seamlessly with external partners critical to an initiative’s success.
  • Provide internal support to other EDF staff drawn from subject matter expertise and fluency with equity and justice considerations.
  • Advise and participate in the development of health-equity projects, including with academic collaborators.
  • Effectively translate and distill complex scientific concepts into accessible language for EDF donors/members, policy makers and lay audience including presentations, blogs, proposals, and other internal documents.
  • Maintain external relationships with key stakeholders and represent EDF as an external expert in a variety of settings when needed.
  • Manage internal staff and consultants, as needed.
  • Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organisational challenges in alignment with EDF values.

Qualifications

  • A PhD in environmental health, public health, or another health science-related field and three to five years of professional experience, with an established record of scientific publications and presentations, or a Master’s degree with at least 8 years of related experience.
  • Keen strategic capacity; demonstrated ability to direct one’s own advocacy work (and/or scientific research if a PhD candidate); demonstrated ability to adapt and refine strategy based on changing considerations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence. Willing to work primarily in a collaborative team structure but capable of operating independently when needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects with numerous team members in a fast-paced working environment, and a high capacity for working collaboratively across multiple initiatives.
  • Experience translating technical knowledge for a non-academic audience and developing policy positions that require technical knowledge and expertise.
  • Clear, concise and engaging verbal and written communicator; experience working with media.
  • Some on-the-ground experience outside of North America, in Asia, Europe, or Latin America, is a plus.
  • Experience working successfully as an authentic partner with communities bearing the brunt of environmental and climate injustice.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Hiring Range

We offer a strong total rewards package encompassing competitive salary, robust benefits, and professional development opportunities consistent with a modern global organisation.

The pay range for this role is 100,000 - 112,000 USD which takes into account factors such as candidate experience, skills, training, internal team equity and local norms.
