Purpose of the Role

The Conversation’s Marketing & Campaigns Manager implements the Australian & NZ edition’s audience campaign strategies. Reporting to the editor and working closely with the social & multimedia team, you’ll be responsible for executing campaigns for maintaining and growing The Conversation’s brand awareness and engagement, onsite traffic, newsletters and on-going donations from readers.

You’ll have a passion for creative brand messaging across multiple platforms.

This role will suit someone with a background in audience marketing and digital campaigns with a solid understanding of the “reader funnel” and conversions. Ideally you would have experience working with external creative agencies and freelancers.

You’ll have experienced the fast-paced, adaptability and high-standard of accuracy that a newsroom requires, and have a solid understanding of digital publishing. The role requires innovative thinking to reach new audiences and increase engagement with current readers and convert readers to regular donors.

The role includes:

  • Planning for our annual end of financial year donations drive, including the development of visual assets and coordination of copy
  • Creating a post-campaign analysis and use tools such as Google Analytics and Salesforce data and Canva to determine giving trends and communicate outcomes
  • Working with The Conversation’s Philanthropy and Bequest Manager to maintain and develop relationships with key donors
  • Working with the Strategic Partnerships manager to develop and stage an events program
  • Working with The Conversation’s Design Lead to improve user experience for donors
  • Being across Australia’s donations landscape to ensure The Conversation is up to date with online giving trends and tools
  • Identifying opportunities to grow the newsletter subscribers and developing campaigns to deliver new subscribers
  • Monthly Audience development meetings with The Conversation global network
  • Regular reporting to staff and stakeholders

Key selection criteria

You must be highly organised and able to prioritise competing demands in a fast-paced newsroom environment. Ideally, you will have experience in:

  • Project management and coordination of marketing campaigns
  • Writing compelling copy for SEO and social
  • Mapping customer journeys, relationship marketing automation and customer lifecycle management
  • Working with marketing and media buying agencies
  • Salesforce, Google Analytics, Data Studio, Facebook ads manager, Creator Studio, Canva
  • Online fundraising or working with a not-for-profit organisation with donors
  • Knowledge of public affairs and an interest in the news
  • High level of initiative and enthusiasm
