The Opportunity

The Tangentyere Safe House (Ndarndarinjika Safe Houses) provides short term crisis accommodation for Aboriginal children between the ages of 5-12 years old, including respite care. Working from a child centred approach the aim of the program is to ensure that young people are supported therapeutically through the safe provision of a physically, emotionally, and culturally appropriate family environment. The program recognises continued connection to family and culture as integral to a child’s identity and has cultural safety as a fundamental principle of its service provision.

This position is responsible to provide assistance in the day-to-day operations of the Tangentyere Safe House including provision of food and clothing for children, liaison with Territory Families, Housing & Communities (TFHC) regarding children’s medical, cultural, and schooling needs and access visits, upkeep of client records and files, ensuring the social and emotional wellbeing and care of children, and working with the Coordinator around training, supervision, on call and rostering of staff as well as TFHC reporting requirements.

The Team Leader reports directly to the Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure best practice standards of care, supervision, and protection to children in our care by providing a safe and consistent developmentally and culturally appropriate living environment, in line with the National Standards for Out of Home Care and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander Child Placement principles.
  • Provide high quality support of staff and resources to ensure the smooth running of Tangentyere Safe House.
  • Work closely with Coordinator to ensure provision of training, regular team meetings are organised for all Safe House carers to ensure safe and developmentally appropriate provision of care.
  • Identify and address the needs of young people living in the Safe House.
  • Documentation, record keeping and reporting in accordance with relevant internal and external policies and procedures.
  • Other reasonable duties as required.
  • Assist with achieving quality management objectives across the organisation.

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

Required

  • Qualifications and/or experience in Early Childhood.
  • Qualification and/or experience in residential care for children, community service work, family support or related field.
  • Ability to lead and be part of a team, providing guidance, training, and support to care workers, including leadership at regular staff meetings within the house.
  • Ability to support the implementation of program documentation and organisational systems within the house.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal culture and extended family kinship systems.
  • Ability to work outside of normal business hours.
  • Current First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain one
  • Current NT Drivers Licence, Working with Children’s (Ochre) Card, satisfactory Police Check, and proof of up-to-date vaccination against COVID19.

Desired

  • Working knowledge of Aboriginal Language/s.
  • An understanding of the social justice issues facing Aboriginal People and the role of the Tangentyere Council programs in addressing these issues.
