Opportunity for a Generalist Solicitor

Full-time position (1.0 FTE) or 2x part-time positions (0.6FTE), SCHADS 6-7, $96,969 to $109,253pa (pro rata) (salary dependant on experience) + super + salary packaging + additional paid Christmas leave.

Who is SCALES? What makes us different?

SCALES Community Legal Centre is a not for profit incorporated association based in Rockingham providing a range of free legal services to the south coastal metropolitan region of Kwinana and Rockingham. SCALES partners with Murdoch University to host the Student Law Clinic.

What our new Generalist Solicitor looks like

We are looking for a Generalist Solicitor with a passion for social justice and working with disadvantaged and vulnerable individuals. Whilst we don’t want to be too prescriptive about the areas of law that our potential candidates’ have practiced, we are looking for someone with an interest in Family Law or developing their skills in Family Law.

The Generalist Solicitor will provide legal services that include information, referral, advice, advocacy, casework, representation, community legal education, and law and policy reform. They will be working with clients who are women experiencing family and domestic violence.

Key Responsibilities

  • All aspects of legal service delivery including representation, casework, and advice
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Supervision of staff including junior solicitors, advocates, and volunteers
  • Develop and implement community legal education programs relevant to women experiencing family violence

It's great you are still reading – that means you resonate with the above! We are searching for someone who can meet most of the following:

  • Holds, or is eligible to hold, a current unrestricted practising certificate in WA
  • Demonstrated experience in providing high-quality legal advice and casework services
  • A strong commitment to social justice principles
  • The capacity to work effectively, independently, and collaboratively
  • Well-developed oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Well-developed legal research skills
  • Sound computer skills and ability to prepare reports, court documents, and letters
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal women and women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience working with women experiencing family violence (desirable).

Ideally you will also possess the following personal attributes too:

  • High ethical standards and values, and the ability to act with integrity and confidentiality
  • Team player able to engage people, problem solve, take initiative and achieve results
  • Exhibits cultural competency and understanding of trauma-informed practices
  • Energy, enthusiasm and resilience (as you will be dealing with sensitive and confronting material)
  • An understanding of and commitment to the work of community legal centres
  • Supervising and mentoring experience

This is a full-time position or 2x part-time positions (0.6 FTE), and you will base yourself from our Rockingham office.
