The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service (TALS) is looking for a Senior Lawyer to join its Hobart team in Southern Tasmania.

The focus of the role will be to lead the criminal law practice within the region, support the operation & management of the office and provide culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to clients in a broad range of matters.

What we are looking for

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in criminal practice and procedure, with substantial experience in appearance work in the Magistrates Court and experience in the Supreme Court is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring and supervising staff, including junior lawyers.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with others and foster a positive team environment.
  • An understanding of the social issues faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Tasmania, and a deep appreciation and respect of their cultural needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to relate to a wide variety of people.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and relationship building skills, demonstrating a history of maintaining positive and effective partnerships.

Requirements

The successful candidate will need to be admitted as a Barrister or Practitioner of the Supreme Court of Tasmania, undergo a National Police Check and hold (or apply for) a current Working with Vulnerable Persons registration.
