Due to the organisation's growth, the Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service (TALS) has created an exciting new Executive role, Principal Lawyer (Family).

The Principal Lawyer (Family) is responsible for managing the delivery of family and child safety legal services, and the operation of the legal services provided by our Family Violence Prevention Legal Service (SiS).

They will also participate and contribute to policy and law reform, advocating in respect of family, child safety, family violence and sexual harm issues for Aboriginal communities in Tasmania.

The role reports to the Principal Lawyer (TALS).

What we are looking for

  • Admission as a Legal Practitioner in Tasmania (or eligibility for admission), with a least 7 years post admission experience in Family and/or Child Safety matters, including Family Court and Federal Circuit Court of Australia (trials and hearings).
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in leading, motivating, developing, and mentoring lawyers and administration staff.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal communities combined with continuing respect and support when considering service delivery and other support for clients and their communities.
  • A commitment to and understanding of the unique challenges and needs of Aboriginal family violence/sexual violence victim/survivors or an ability to quickly understand this context.
  • Previously demonstrated experience in, or willingness to learn to apply and support staff to apply a strong trauma-informed legal practice.
  • Demonstrated high level communication skills, including well developed advocacy skills, demonstrated negotiation skills, and the capacity to effectively convey complex legal information to non-specialists.
  • A high level of personal initiative, resourcefulness, and diligence, including demonstrated organisational and prioritisation skills that enable the management of complex evidential and legal materials.
  • Ability to collaborate in partnership with Tasmania Legal Aid and other community and community legal organisations with whom TALS interacts.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and inclusively.
  • Well-developed legal research skills.

Requirements

The successful candidate will need to undergo a National Police Check and apply for a Working with Vulnerable Persons registration.

A current driver’s licence is required, as travel will occur across Tasmania.
