The Department of Anaesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine, St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne is seeking suitably qualified applicants for Anaesthesia Provisional Fellowship positions (ANZCA Trainee post ATY-2), or FANZCA/suitably qualified International applicants for Anaesthesia Fellow positions for the 2021 year either commencing February 2021 or August 2021, for 12 months.
The selected candidates will rotate through the range of anaesthesiology services provided by St. Vincent's, this will include regional anaesthesia (including ultrasound), cardiac (with echocardiography), thoracic anaesthesia, neuro-anaesthesia and airway/ENT.
Two fellowships with an emphasis on regional anaesthesia are offered in the department which offer an initial 6-month period of 2 days per week focused on regional anaesthesia skills and knowledge development to be followed by a more independent role with an emphasis on advanced techniques, research, teaching and training.
Fellows and advanced trainees provide anaesthesia under appropriate levels of supervision and work 43 hours per week plus rostered overtime, with participation in an after-hours call schedule. Trainees are entitled to 5 weeks of annual leave; other working conditions are as per appropriate workplace agreements. Fellows have dedicated research and education time, and involvement in Quality Assurance.
The Department of Anaesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine has a medical staff of 80 including full time and visiting consultant anaesthetists, anaesthetic trainees and HMOs. In addition we have 2 pain nurses, and 4 research staff, plus biomedical technicians, and administrative staff.
We perform over 16,000 anaesthetics per year covering all the surgical specialties, except for paediatrics and obstetrics. Regional anaesthesia is used in over 25% of cases.
There is a strong teaching programme with a dedicated half-day of tutorials per week and a weekly department education meeting.
We have a simulator on site which allows our staff and trainees to be exposed to anaesthetic emergencies to improve their management of these difficult situations. We have a strong research program, and at the advanced trainee and fellowship levels there is a strong incentive for clinical research. Our Department has many new research projects and over 20 publications per year along with a number of National and International presentations.
