Position Summary:

St Vincent's is contracted by leading service providers MTC Broadspectrum to deliver health services to Parklea Correctional Centre - a major Sydney prison with capacity for 1,816 male inmates.

Position Summary:

A vacancy exists in the above unit within the Parklea Corrections Complex for a highly motivated Male Aboriginal Health Worker with appropriate knowledge and skills to join our friendly and supportive team.

As an Aboriginal Health Worker you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on an individual and the community. You will serve as a critical link to identifying the health care needs of the individual patient and promote health and wellbeing.

Selection Criteria:

  • Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent's Health Australia.
  • To be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1977. Being male is recognised as a genuine occupation qualification and is authorised under section 31(2h) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures as well as an understanding of the health and welfare needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander custodial patients and/or those experiencing with mental health, alcohol or drugs or chronic disease health needs.
  • Demonstrated experience in working constructively with Aboriginal communities, providing support and advocacy for Aboriginal patients, families and carers.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with Aboriginal people on sensitive matters.
  • High level skills in time management, liaison and negotiation, including the ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team in a high demand environment with competing demands.
  • High level written, verbal and computer communication skills, with adequate computer skills including Microsoft Office and Patient Record Systems.
