We recognise the essential role that people with lived experience of suicide play in shaping better systems, responses, and ultimately saving lives. This role ensures that expertise is embedded across our work as the national peak body for suicide prevention.

Suicide Prevention Australia is the national peak body for the suicide prevention sector. We exist to provide a clear, collective voice for suicide prevention, so that together we can save lives. We believe that through collaboration and shared purpose, we can work towards our ambition of a world without suicide.

We are a member-based organisation guided by people with lived experience of suicide. Our members include large and small organisations, practitioners, researchers and community leaders working across all areas of suicide prevention.

About the role

The Lived Experience Leader will provide strategic and practical leadership to ensure lived experience is embedded across Suicide Prevention Australia’s work.

This role sits within the Advocacy team and reports to the Director of Advocacy. The role works closely with teams across the organisation to ensure consistent and meaningful engagement with lived experience perspectives in all activities.

In this role you will:

  • Lead the ongoing refinement of Suicide Prevention Australia’s lived experience engagement approach
  • Provide leadership and advice on best-practice, safe and meaningful lived experience engagement
  • Act as a key conduit between Suicide Prevention Australia and our Lived Experience Panel, supporting effective collaboration and influence
  • Lead the development of key communications materials with a focus on a broad range of lived experience
  • Provide organisation-wide advice on embedding lived experience across Suicide Prevention Australia’s work
  • Help strengthen how lived experience perspectives shape strategic decision-making

About you

We are looking for someone who brings:

  • Strong understanding of lived experience engagement principles in suicide prevention and/or related sectors
  • Ability to work sensitively, ethically and collaboratively in lived experience spaces
  • Strong organisation and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Experience advising on advocacy or systems change
  • Confidence working across diverse stakeholders and organisational levels
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate lived experience into influence
  • A commitment to safe and inclusive engagement practices

Time commitment and salary

  • Location & Flexibility: For those based in Sydney, this role requires 2 days per week in the office. For those based outside of Sydney, the role can be performed remotely with occasional travel to Sydney for quarterly meetings and other key events as required. 
  • Hours: This is a part-time position requiring 3 days per week (0.6 FTE)
  • Salary: Equivalent full-time range of $95,000 - $105,000 FTE (pro-rata for part-time hours) plus superannuation and salary packaging
