Suicide Prevention Australia is seeking a Government Relations Advisor to support our advocacy and engagement with government, helping to strengthen policy influence in suicide prevention across Australia.

We are the national peak body for suicide prevention, working to provide a clear collective voice so that together we can save lives. This role sits within our Sector Advocacy team and plays a key part in ensuring our engagement with government is coordinated, strategic, and evidence informed.

About the role

The Government Relations Advisor will support the coordination and delivery of Suicide Prevention Australia’s engagement with government stakeholders including Ministers and departmental representatives.

In this role, you will help ensure our advocacy is well-informed, well-timed, and effectively communicated, supporting the development of submissions, briefs and policy materials that advance suicide prevention priorities. 

In this role you will:  

  • Coordinate engagement with government stakeholders and maintain tracking of meetings and interactions  
  • Organise meetings, prepare briefs, take notes, and support follow-up actions  
  • Contribute to government relations strategy, including research, analysis, letter writing, and policy input  
  • Assist in developing submissions, reports, briefs and other advocacy materials  
  • Undertake qualitative and quantitative research to strengthen policy and advocacy positions  
  • Monitor political, media and policy developments relevant to suicide prevention  
  • Identify emerging opportunities for policy influence and thought leadership  
  • Support internal teams with government relations insights and information  
  • Contribute to member and external communications, briefings and correspondence  

About you

You are a highly organised and proactive policy or government relations professional with strong writing and research skills. You understand how government works and are confident engaging with stakeholders in a fast-paced, purpose-driven environment.  

We are looking for someone who brings: 

  • Strong understanding of government processes, Parliament and legislation/policy development  
  • Experience preparing briefs, submissions or policy documents  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills  
  • Strong organisation and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities  
  • Confidence working both independently and collaboratively

Time commitment and salary

  • Location & Flexibility: This is a Sydney-based role and requires 2 days per week in the office.  
  • Hours: This is a full-time role (5 days per week) 
  • Salary: This role has a salary range of $90,000 - $100,000
