Analyst / Graduate Analyst

Strategy Policy Research

SPR is an advisory firm specialising in climate change, energy economics and the built environment. Our work pairs analytical rigour with a practical understanding of how policy is made and delivered. We do this work because it is important and it needs capable people doing it. We are looking for an intelligent and ambitious analyst to join us.

The role

You will hit the ground running on projects. The mix changes week to week, but the core of it is:

  • Building and running quantitative models for energy and economic analysis.
  • Analysing and advising on policy design and outcomes.
  • Drafting reports, briefings, and submissions in our house style.
  • Supporting client work and answering client queries.
  • Staying at the forefront of domain expertise and enhancing the firm’s knowledge.

You will report to our Senior Consultants, Liam and Reuben. The role is (initially) a 12-month fixed term position based in our Melbourne CBD office.

What you need

We are smart, ambitious and we back ourselves to take on hard problems and solve them. We want someone who shares these attributes. Strong graduates and people with a few years behind them are both encouraged to apply.

You’ll need:

  • Strong Excel/quantitative skills. Building a model is about solving problems with numbers.
  • Clear writing and clear speech. You can explain a hard idea to someone outside the field.
  • Critical thinking. You question your findings and what you’re told (particularly by AI).
  • Intellectual curiosity. You want to know how things work and why.
  • The confidence to have a go. You can tackle hard problems knowing you might be wrong.

Nice to have:

  • A grounding in energy, climate, economics, public policy or the built environment.
  • Experience working to budgets.

A degree is not essential, but if you do not have one you will need to show you have been doing something interesting instead.

On AI

We pride ourselves on the quality and integrity of our work. We believe nothing can replace the role of human experts in pushing the boundaries of knowledge. That said, we recognise the power and potential of advanced AI tools in supporting this process. Used responsibly, they can help us work more efficiently without compromising the standards our clients expect.

All this is to say, we want someone who uses AI well. That means:

  • You can do the work without it. If Claude went down tomorrow you would still get the job done.
  • You use AI to expand the ambition of your work, not to outsource thinking.
  • Your work does not sound like AI wrote it. We can tell, and so can our clients.

What we offer

  • Work on projects that make a real impact.
  • A small team where you can grow and lead.
  • Competitive remuneration and bonus opportunities. When the company does well, so do you.

Our process

If you apply, we will not waste your time. We will read every application ourselves and everyone will hear back. If we want to hear more we will send you a short activity, shortlist on that and your application, and hire after an interview and reference check.
