About the Role

Youth Collective engages young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds at the local level to inform service planning, implementation and outcomes. The primary role of the Newly Arrived Refugee Youth Project Officer is to reach out, engage and connect newly arrived young people to non-casework Settlement Services Program activities informed by the voices of young people while still accessing services in the Humanitarian Settlement Services Program.

The Project Officer will facilitate linkages between newly arrived refugee youth and NSP youth workers in the Fairfield and Liverpool LGAs and work with staff in these two areas to identify and engage young people in the planning and delivery of SSP activities tailored to their needs. 

The Project Officer will work closely with the HSS teams in Fairfield and Liverpool and NSP staff in these LGAs hence will be partly based at CORE Community Services and Western Sydney MRC (formerly Liverpool MRC).

The position will positively and actively engage young people in activities they have had a voice in shaping across a wide range of domains – e.g. sports, education, employment and English.

This is a 12 month full time (70 hour fortnight) contract position, based in Fairfield and Liverpool.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Identify, organise and facilitate regular and creative youth consultation activities for newly arrived refugee young people in collaboration with the HSS team
  • Participates in the development of strategic approach towards engagement of newly arrived refugee youth in collaboration with relevant NSP partner and young people
  • Coordinate and assist in the implementation of creative youth engagement strategies delivered under the NARY project
  • Ensure that the activities under the NARY Project are informed and directed by youth for youth and are responsive to the needs of newly arrived refugee youth
  • Build new and maintain existing stakeholder relationships with relevant providers and community groups that are beneficial to newly arrived refugee young people
  • Monitor, record and ensure the desired outcomes of the NARY Project are achieved in a timely manner
  • Participates in the NSP Youth Workers Network and other relevant networks to raise the profile of and give voice to newly arrived youth
  • Work with Youth Collective Coordinator to facilitate the NARY Project Steering Group, which will assist in the direction and implementation of this project

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Certificate IV or above in Youth Work/Community Services
  • Experience in working with young people from refugee background
  • Demonstrated understanding of the needs and risks associated with newly arrived refugees and humanitarian entrants youth
  • Well-developed understanding of the youth and settlement sector
  • Proven skills in stakeholder engagement and management
  • Previous experience running youth consultation activities
  • Excellent record keeping and data management skills

Desirable

  • Bilingual; preferably with Arabic language skills
  • Current Driver license
  • Experience in project management
  • First aid certificate
