The Smith Family is a national children’s education charity helping disadvantaged young Australians to get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves.

Reporting into the National Manager, Risk the newly created role of Risk Manager will be vital in providing operational risk management, governance and compliance support to The Smith Family’s business. With its almost 900 employees, and over 6,000 volunteers it reaches out to more than 200,000 children, families and community professionals. Its diverse range of programs supports 91 communities across Australia. The scope of this role is significant! As such we are looking for a passionate operational risk management or internal audit professional who thrives in a varied yet supportive environment.

An overview of a day in the life of the Risk Manager might look like this, but every day can be quite different:

  • Management of The Smith Family’s GRC software platform
  • Technical support to the business including notification processes such as incidents and internal child safety alerts that are managed through the GRC software
  • Further improving and driving the implementation of The Smith Family’s risk management framework across the organisation
  • Running Risk Workshops
  • Providing reporting & analysis
  • Supporting the business in complying with the organisation’s Privacy related processes
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships both internally and externally in order to improve the organisation’s approach to risk and compliance.

It takes a special kind of person to be our Risk Manager. You will hold relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience in operational risk management and ideally have some internal audit experience. Your relevant recent experience includes the proficient application of ISO:31000. The Smith Family manages risk across the following levels: Organisational; Functional Plan; Programs and Internal Control. You need to be able to cover this bandwidth and oversee broad areas including brand, financial and child protection. You will also be responsible for the management and further development of our GRC software at a national level and will need to be comfortable in operating GRC software.

You will need to have effective time management skills and be able to switch easily from working at an operational level to being strategic in pursuing your goals. You will have strong communication, influencing and interpersonal skills as you will work with team members at all levels to successfully drive outcomes.
