The Smith Family is a children’s education charity that helps young Australians experiencing disadvantage to create better futures for themselves through harnessing the power of education.

We are seeking an experienced Advocacy Communications Specialist to join our family. Reporting to the National Manager, Media and working alongside dedicated, energised, and passionate team members, this role will use your creativity and passion for advancing the equity in education agenda by raising awareness of how children and young people experiencing disadvantage need extra support with their education and how that helps to make a life-changing difference

About our role

Your responsibilities:

  • Develop and produce effective and engaging thought leadership content for The Smith Family’s audiences in paid, owned and earned media.
  • Support senior leaders and other key spokespeople with thought-leadership messaging, for publication in multiple channels.
  • Facilitate effective communication of complex issues to different audiences with different needs, to support social change.
  • Develop and manage the advocacy content calendar to maximise thought-leadership opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with a range of groups and individuals to effectively communicate The Smith Family’s advocacy goals.

About you

As well as passion for community, you will bring the following:

  • Degree qualification in a relevant field eg journalism/PR or communications / or possess significant and demonstrable in-house experience with skills at producing and publishing brand and/or thought leadership content in a range of channels.
  • Advanced and diverse written communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex issues and technical language (eg from research reports) in an accessible and compelling way.
  • Digital skills, including experience with online publishing tools eg web CMS, social media.
  • Strong people skills for liaising with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Highly organised, effective under pressure, deadline-oriented and proactive.
  • Strong awareness and interest in news and current affairs and an understanding of government, policies (especially education) and political processes in Australia is desirable.
  • Have or willing to obtain an employee Working With Children's Check.
