The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984. Employment conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Collective Agreement 2016–2019. In addition to your salary, generous employer-sponsored superannuation of 15.4% is offered.
The Community Organiser works with communities across NSW on issues that are important to them. The organiser engages & empowers communities and coordinates the Senator's presence in the local community.
The Community Organiser also has primary responsibility for community based volunteer management, including campaign development, recruitment and on-boarding of volunteers and local event planning and coordination.
It is a core outcome of the position to link the Senator’s work in Parliament and the work of the Senate office with diverse communities and movements across NSW.
Workbase: Sydney with some travel in NSW, occasional travel to Canberra.
Supervisor/manager: Chief of Staff.
Responsibilities
- Building and maintaining relationships and communication with local communities, community groups and local organisations across NSW, particularly:
- People and groups associated with the Senator’s portfolio work
- Migrant, refugee and CALD communities
- First Nations communities
- Greens members and supporters
- Local campaigns in specific regions
- Other groups whose voices are underrepresented in Parliament
- Ensuring the voices of these groups are represented in Parliament, and assistance is provided by the office where possible to address systemic issues in access to Government services, justice and identify opportunities for media coverage.
- Work with the Office Manager on constituent work including responding to incoming correspondence from constituents, providing assistance to constituents, and undertaking some casework including on matters relating to NDIS, Centrelink and migration.
- Organising and running community and stakeholder events including taking photos, meeting people and supporting the Senator.
- Attending community events, which may require working on weekends and/or public holidays.
- Proactively pitching ideas to the team including escalating community issues for media, policy and parliamentary action.
- Content development on community issues for local media, communications and local policy matters including developing a media database for relevant regions/communities
- Work with the Social Media and Communications Advisor to support the Senator’s social media presence. The Campaigns and Community Advisor will have responsibility for posting content relating to events and campaigns pertaining to portfolio work and policy announcements.

- Maintain a clean and safe workspace, contribute to a safe and respectful workplace culture, and abide by work health and safety laws, policies and procedures
- Undertake training as directed, including induction and safe and respectful workplace training
- Creating opportunities for volunteering, career development and short term work within the Senator’s team to support engaged community members to become involved with the Greens.
Essential
- Prior experience campaigning and/or working with communities or grassroots organisations including within the Greens
- Demonstrated experience in campaigning including developing materials, event management, volunteer recruitment and retention, and community organising
- Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with a wide cross section of individuals and organisations
- Ability and interest in working as part of a team, including under time constraints and strict deadlines
- Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
- Capacity to comprehend complex issues, think strategically and adapt to changing circumstances, and exercise sound political judgement
- Excellent organisational skills, including demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and work to tight deadlines in a dynamic environment with minimal supervision
- Sound knowledge and understanding of Australian Greens’ policies and major issues.
