Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCAR) is a progressive animal welfare shelter whose mission is to not only rescue, rehabilitate and re-home homeless animals, but to also create community-focused solutions aimed at keeping pets in homes and out of pounds. We are looking for an experienced and adaptable person to join our passionate team as our new Shelter Receptionist. If the following describes you, we want you to apply!

The Receptionist is responsible for delivering high quality customer service for our clients and their pets and to act as a welcoming front of house SCAR representative.

This is an important, client facing role that requires a can-do attitude and excellent time management skills. They will interact closely with many different people and departments so must be approachable, friendly and upbeat. The Receptionist supports the mission, goals and philosophy of SCAR.

The right person will have extensive reception/admin experience and understand the importance of having compassion and empathy when interacting with people, harbouring respect for both animals and people, as well as having an intrinsic concern and affection for animals.

Duties:

  • Uphold SCAR's values and mission statement during interactions with the public and team members, adhere to its policies and procedures, greet clients in a courteous and welcoming manner.
  • Answer telephone calls and direct calls appropriately, in a timely manner.
  • Receipt, issue and dispatch all mail and deliveries plus other general admin duties.
  • Provide basic, SCAR approved information to the public regarding general animal care advice to the public or pass on to appropriate departments where required.
  • Seek opportunities to sell products and services for the improved wellbeing of the pet.
  • Keep admin supplies fully stocked and coordinate admin supply orders.
  • Receive incoming supplies, orders and donations.
  • Maintain stock control of over-the-counter items for sale at reception.
  • Maintain till and facilitate change requirements when needed and create end of day invoices/ statements.
  • Follow SCAR Opening and Closing SOP’s.
  • Facilitate microchip transfers via appropriate microchip agencies.
  • Facilitate adoption/intake/surrender paperwork and ShelterBuddy requirements at time of adoption/intake/surrender in conjunction with the Pathways Coordinator.
  • Supervise and train reception volunteers in conjunction with the Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Schedule appointments when required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Commitment to the mission, goals and success of SCAR.
  • Enthusiasm and a can-do attitude.
  • Empathy and a non-judgmental approach.
  • Previous animal handling experience or experience working in an animal shelter will be highly regarded.
  • Minimum 3 years proven reception/admin experience.
  • Ability to multitask in a busy workplace/ non-profit environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relations with the public and other employees.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, aptitude for effective prioritising under pressure.
  • A strong work ethic, happy to go above and beyond.
  • Experience using the ShelterBuddy system will be highly regarded.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and database systems.
  • Current driver’s licence.

Working Conditions

This is a Part Time role (3 days) with the potential to lead to Full Time work in the future.
