Who is SCALES?

SCALES Community Legal Centre is a not-for-profit incorporated association based in Rockingham providing a range of free legal services to the south coastal metropolitan region of Kwinana and Rockingham. SCALES partners with Murdoch University to host the Student Law Clinic.

Our Vision is a community where human rights are respected, and people can assert those rights in a fair, affordable, and accessible justice system.

Solicitor Role

We are looking for a Solicitor who is committed to working with members of the community who experience disadvantage and vulnerability. We are looking for someone with an interest in Family Law or developing their skills in Family Law.

The Solicitor will provide legal services that include information, referral, advice, advocacy, casework, representation, community legal education, and law and policy reform. They will be working with clients who are women experiencing family and domestic violence.

Key Responsibilities

  • All aspects of legal service delivery including representation, casework, and advice
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement community legal education programs relevant to women experiencing family violence.

We are seeking someone who can meet most of the following:

  • Holds a current unrestricted practicing certificate in WA.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing high-quality legal advice and casework services.
  • A strong commitment to social justice principles.
  • The capacity to work effectively, independently, and collaboratively.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Well-developed legal research skills.
  • Sound computer skills and ability to prepare reports, court documents, and letters.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal women and women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience working with women experiencing family violence (desirable).

You will also possess the following personal attributes:

  • High ethical standards and values, and the ability to act with integrity and confidentiality.
  • Team player able to engage people, problem solve, take initiative and achieve results.
  • Exhibits cultural competency and understanding of trauma-informed practices.
  • Energy, enthusiasm, and resilience (as you will be dealing with sensitive and confronting material).
  • An understanding of and commitment to the work of community legal centres.

This is a full-time position or a part-time position (0.6 FTE), and you will be based in our Rockingham office.

Renumeration.

  • $102,874 to $113,569 pa (pro rata for part-time) (salary depending on experience)
  • Up to $15,900 per annum salary packaging options.
  • Superannuation.
  • Practice Certificate paid by SCALES.
  • Extra leave over Christmas.
