SUMMARY

The communications manager is a new, high-impact role at Rewiring Australia. It is an excellent opportunity for a dynamic communications professional to be at the cutting edge of the most important issue facing the world, promoting the most optimistic and actionable strategy and working with one of the world’s most influential experts, Dr Saul Griffith.

The role reports to the executive director. The communications manager will develop and implement the communications strategy, building on the high profile of Rewiring Australia and its co-founder and chief scientist, Dr Griffith.

ABOUT REWIRING AUSTRALIA

Rewiring Australia is a dynamic, rapidly growing non-profit start-up. We are the Australian part of a growing international network of climate organisations pushing for rapid emission reduction through electrification. We have shifted the climate and energy debate towards urgent, optimistic action that reduces energy bills for consumers and has the potential to deliver emissions reduction towards a 1.5 degree carbon budget. Staff mostly work from home but there is a shared space office in Austinmer where local staff work part time.

REPORTING & RELATIONSHIPS

  • Report to executive director
  • Work closely with Rewiring Australia’s communications and political consultants
  • Collaborate with communications peers in Rewiring America and Rewiring New Zealand when required

REMUNERATION, BENEFITS AND TERMS

Rewiring Australia is a start-up and 12 month roles are anticipated to continue subject to funding.

  • $100,000 - $120,000 annual salary plus standard superannuation entitlements
  • Full-time, 12 month contract
  • 38 hours per week with some out of hours work required
  • Standard leave entitlements
  • Working from home (preferably in Sydney, Canberra or Melbourne)

RESPONSIBILITIES

The inaugural communications manager will help shape the role, which will evolve over the 12 months. This list is the starting point:

  • Build on the significant media profile of Rewiring Australia and its co-founder and chief scientist, Dr Saul Griffith to develop a 3 year communications strategy for the organisation
  • Build on the uniquely positive and practical “voice” of Rewiring Australia and Dr Saul Griffith in energy and climate and expand this into economics and climate impacts
  • Manage communications across the organisation including media, website, social media, speeches, reports and branding
  • Develop relationships with journalists and editors with a particular focus on the Federal Press Gallery and climate and energy reporters
  • Work with internal specialists to develop proactive media strategies for reports and events
  • Manage reactive PR and help spokespeople carve in to developing stories
  • Train spokespeople and coach them before key interviews
  • Draft opinion pieces, key speeches and presentations
  • Manage brand including document templates, logo and brand colours
  • Manage the Rewiring Australia website and social media channels (Twitter, LinkedIn)
  • Ensure a consistent set of key data points are used

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience working as a journalist or communications specialist
  • Strong networks in the Australian media
  • Ability to crystallise complex issues into accurate and compelling language
  • Excellent news judgement
  • Strategic thinker
  • Proactive
  • Confidence and calmness under pressure
  • Superb writing, verbal and interpersonal skills
  • High levels of organisational, time management and problem-solving skills
  • Desirable: experience in climate change or clean energy
  • Desirable: experience managing communications collaboration in complex partnership and stakeholder environments

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Tertiary qualifications in journalism, communications, public relations or equivalent experience
