An exciting opportunity exists for a Senior Advisor, Prevention Policy to join our team and play an important role in Respect Victoria and conduct meaningful work to assist Respect Victoria drive long term systemic change in the prevention of family violence and all forms of violence against women.

Position Details

As a prevention of violence against women or family violence specialist, with strong policy credentials and an interest in supporting systemic policy reform in Victoria and beyond, this position will provide authoritative policy advice to drive evidence-informed public policy.

The position will be responsible for developing and delivering evidence-based policy positions and projects to drive thought leadership in prevention. It will work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to support the provision of expert, thought-leading policy for the prevention of violence against women and family violence. This will include supporting evidence-based policy and funding advice to Government, as well as advice to organisations, to ensure prevention of violence against women and family violence is implemented across government and community. This will also inform and support Respect Victoria’s strategic intent and public positioning.

Our ideal candidate will have experience working on prevention of violence against women and/or gender equality, a deep understanding of evidence, and strong knowledge of stakeholders and key issues in the primary prevention space.

Respect Victoria

Respect Victoria was established as a Statutory Authority under the Prevention of Family Violence Act 2018 on the 4th October 2018. We have a broad focus on the primary prevention of family violence and violence against women in Victoria, and work collaboratively with stakeholders to provide state-wide leadership to create social, institutional, organisational and community change.

Key responsibilities include

  • Develop and deliver evidence-based policy and position papers, submissions, and reports for public positioning and advocacy
  • Support translation of evidence into policy and thought leadership, considering levers for change (legislative, policy, and other) and inform evidence-based policy and funding advice to Government
  • Analyse prevention research, trends and programmatic activity, and consider and provide advice about implications for policy reform or policy leadership
  • Provide technical prevention advice across the organisation on policy implications for a range of Respect Victoria activity
  • Pro-actively build and maintain effective working relationships and facilitate the flow of information across the agency and with key external stakeholders
  • Review and report on high priority issues, risks and trends and prepare and present comprehensive reports, briefs and agency submissions on complex issues and lead and provide technical prevention policy advice to management
  • As a senior advisor, be visible in the organisation, supporting organisational health and wellbeing and policy development, knowledge sharing and expertise
  • Support a collegiate environment, coaching and supporting any indirect or direct reports, paying attention to individual strengths and performance goals; modelling appropriate behaviours; and providing feedback to support development
  • Work with and manage contractors as required, including monitoring KPIs and milestones, providing feedback to ensure key project requirements and project deliverables are delivered
  • Manage project budgets, keeping accurate records of projects and activities in line with legislative requirements
  • Take an intersectional approach that is informed by principles of self-determination in your work

Essential qualifications

A relevant tertiary qualification (for example, public policy, social sciences, humanities, public health, social work) is required.

Essential experience

Demonstrated experience in the prevention of family violence and all forms of violence against women sector of at least 3 years, is essential for this role.

Essential skills and specialist expertise

  • Nuanced understanding of the evidence base and demonstrated experience in policy development and policy/thought leadership in the prevention of family violence/violence against women including experience in the production of high-quality policy position papers, briefings and reports
  • Specialist knowledge and demonstrated experience in the prevention of family violence and all forms of violence against women sector of at least 3 years is essential for this role

About You

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and authoritatively on the prevention of family violence and all forms of violence against women evidence base and policy landscape
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative working style, including taking ownership and accountability for the quality and timeliness of policy products through a shared development approach, that draws in and actively invites input, evidence and participation, and negotiates and balances views and opinions according to the key evidence and vision
  • Strong conceptual and analytical skills required, along with attention to detail
  • Creativity and innovation, including the drawing in of new ways of doing things, along with creative ideas and reflections is preferred
