Sex Workers Outreach Project

SWOP is seeking a person with English & Mandarin oral & written communication skills to join our outreach team providing health promotion information & support to sex workers in metro & regional NSW.

Previous direct experience in the sex industry is essential, as is a NSW drivers license and some outdoor and evening work. All information provided by applicants is kept confidential and only viewed by the interview panel.

This is a part time position 2 days per week (14 hours/week) and based in Surry Hills with work from home options available.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Develop and maintain preventative education strategies aimed at increasing HIV and sexual health awareness among culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) sex workers and owners and operators of sex services premises in NSW, including developing culturally appropriate resource materials and fostering peer education strategies.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

Provide outreach, education and support primarily to culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) people who are engaged in sex work in NSW, as well as to other sex industry workers in relation to HIV, sexual health and related issues.

  1. Review, translate and develop education resources to improve understanding of HIV, sexual health and related issues among CALD sex workers.
  2. Provide information and training to SWOP staff and other service providers on issues faced by CALD sex workers.
  3. Identify client’s needs and provide appropriate support or referral.
  4. Continually build and enhance partnerships with agencies and external service providers to ensure coordinated responses to community issues.
  5. Collect and maintain appropriate statistics, administrative records and written reports.
  6. Actively participate in and contribute to an ongoing process of supervision, unit meetings, team meetings, general staff meetings, quality improvement and professional development strategies.
  7. Maintain a professional standard of behaviour and ensure confidentiality at all times.
  8. Perform other duties to assist with the work of the unit as requested by the line Manager (or designate).

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

  1. Lived experience of sex work and knowledge of the sex industry.
  2. Understanding of and sensitivity to issues for CALD sex workers.
  3. Basic understanding of and willingness to train further in HIV, sexual health/STIs and BBVs (such as Hepatitis C).
  4. Effective bilingual (English and Mandarin) language both written and oral communication skills.
  5. Ability to write well and use relevant office computer programs such as email and Microsoft Word.
  6. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  7. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  8. A full current NSW Drivers Licence.
  9. Capacity and willingness to travel in NSW.

Desirable

  1. Korean speaking.
  2. Experience in translating documents.
  3. Experience providing outreach services.

Additional Information

This position is part-time (28 hrs per fortnight) and based in Surry Hills, Sydney.

The salary range for this position is $31.75 upward per hour plus superannuation and leave loading.
