About Us

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) is an independent statutory authority governed by the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine Act 1985. It is part of the Justice portfolio of the Victorian Government.

The work of the VIFM can be described as a cycle of three parts:

  • Providing forensic medical & scientific services and tissue banking
  • Learning from this work
  • Researching and teaching

This position is within the Forensic Services Division, which includes the disciplines of Forensic Pathology, Forensic Sciences and Clinical Forensic Medicine. Forensic Pathology encompasses Human Identification, Forensic Technical Services and Coronial Admissions and Enquiries.

The VIFM provides informed professional, impartial and competent forensic service to Victoria Police, the Courts and Office of Public Prosecutions, the Coroner, and the legal profession and undertakes teaching and research in these fields.

About the Role

The primary focus of this position is to participate in the provision of an efficient and effective Clinical Forensic Medicine service.

The Senior Forensic Physician also provides teaching and training services by the Institute and the Department of Forensic Medicine at Monash University and works as a member of a close knit, highly motivated team of forensic practitioners that interacts with a wide spectrum of doctors, scientists, legal practitioners and other professionals as well as the police and members of the public. The position also involves service provision at a variety of sites including rural Victoria.

The Senior Forensic Physician will also participate in the provision of 24-hour forensic medical services to Victoria Police including (but not necessarily limited to) the:

  • Examination of adult victims of physical and sexual assault
  • Assessment of police detainees for fitness to be interviewed
  • Collection of biological specimens
  • Preparation of medico-legal reports and statements
  • Provision of advice to police and others regarding clinical forensic matters

Remuneration will be based on years of completion commencing at $304,560 per annum (Year 1 minimum), as per the VIFM Specialist Forensic Pathologists and Physicians Enterprise Agreement 2018.

About You

As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • Demonstrated skill and ability to provide forensic services with an understanding of the complexities, standards and legal issues associated with the collection of forensic evidence in a medical and scientific context
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and sensitivity towards, the legal, medical and social complexities of providing forensic services
  • Ability to participate in teaching and research in clinical forensic medicine and related areas
  • Demonstrated ability to actively participate in a working environment that supports quality practices including employment equity, anti-discrimination, occupational health and safety and ethical behaviour
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively as a member of a highly motivated team of professionals and with a range of other professional groups, institutions and individuals
  • Breadth of knowledge and experience in medical practice and the capacity to perform competent and complex clinical examinations
  • High personal standards in relation to motivation, honesty, objectivity, competence, patient focus, innovation and continuous quality improvement
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex medical concepts in simple terms

Qualifications / Registration / Licences

  • Registration (or eligibility for registration) as a Medical Practitioner by AHPRA
  • Postgraduate qualifications in forensic medicine or related field (or progress towards such a qualification)
  • Current Victorian Driver's licence
  • Current Police and Working with Children Checks (or ability to obtain)

The successful candidate must be either a permanent resident/Australian citizen or possess a valid Australian VISA with eligibility to work.
