The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), the principal organisation representing the medical specialty of Psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand, is seeking three experienced and professional Policy Officers to join our expanding Policy team.
Supported by our Policy Managers, these positions will primarily coordinate and prepare RANZCP policies and submissions that are relevant to the practice of psychiatry and mental health in Australia and New Zealand.
These positions offers diverse and interesting work with career development opportunities and supports the RANZCP to contribute to policy for effective and sustainable practice and improve mental health outcomes across Australia and New Zealand.
The roles have a specific focus to:
- Analyse government policy and actively monitor emerging issues relevant to psychiatric practice and mental health.
- Undertake consultations with members and committees of the RANZCP on policy issues as determined by Executive Management and the Practice, Policy and Partnerships Committee.
- Prepare RANZCP responses and submissions to the governments and other relevant processes/inquiries.
- Prepare briefing materials and provide policy support to the RANZCP President, CEO, and members who represent the RANZCP at meetings with external stakeholders.
- Provide policy support to RANZCP Faculties, Sections, and Working Groups and attend relevant committee meetings as required.
- Provide policy support to the RANZCP’s communications team and assist with media inquiries as required.
- Liaise with RANZCP Branch Offices and NZ National Office to provide appropriate policy support at a jurisdictional and national level.
- Research, draft and progress RANZCP policy documents (position statements, professional practice guidelines) through internal policy review processes.
- Actively monitor the impact of RANZCP policy work, including media coverage and incorporation into government reports and policy design.
- Undertake other duties as required consistent with the role and priorities of the Practice, Policy and Partnerships Department.
The successful candidate will have:
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in policy development and analysis with specific expertise in health and social arenas.
- Understanding and experience in a membership or not for profit medical organisation or the ability to quickly adapt to a complex, committee-based organisational structure.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of government structures and processes.
- Demonstrated ability to use research outcomes to formulate recommendations and implement decisions.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, able to tailor the style to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the health care system
- Ability to grasp new concepts/absorb and analyse large amounts of information on complex topics and produce succinct reports and briefing papers.
- Demonstrated ability to use initiative and progress work with limited supervision, in line with team objectives and priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to take responsibility for a diverse, deadline-focused workload.
- Strong organisational skills and the capacity to ensure committee work plans and outstanding.
- Ability to work effectively with committees made up of expert members; consumer, carer and community representatives.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in an appropriate Health, Social Science, Education, Business, or Research discipline.
