The office of Dr Monique Ryan MP, the Independent Federal Member for Kooyong, is seeking applications for a full-time ongoing Media and Communications Adviser, based inthe Kooyong Electorate Office in Hawthorn East, Victoria with travel to Australian Parliament House in Canberra, ACT.
The Media and Communications Adviser will be responsible for managing the office’s media and communications. This is also an opportunity to play a key role in a vital election campaign.
The media landscape is more atomised than ever before, and this role is broad: you will work across traditional media, social media, email, and outdoor advertising. As such, we encourage you to apply even if you have skills or experience relevant to only some of the role’s key responsibilities.
The most important attributes will be a modern understanding of media, including social media, a willingness to learn and holding values and beliefs consistent with those held by the MP.
This role involves regular travel to Canberra.
Key responsibilities
Traditional media:
- Provide high level media advice to the MP and other staff regarding issues of national and local importance
- Identify and deliver media opportunities at Parliament and within the electorate
- Drafting of media releases in conjunction with the MP and other staff
- Prepare the MP for media events
- Be the point of contact for media inquiries
Social media:
- Write, design, and post on social media, primarily Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and X
- Have a particular focus on scripting, shooting, editing, and posting vertical videos on Instagram and TikTok
Correspondence:
- Write, build and send correspondence including newsletters and emails to the electorate
- Write, build and send other emails to constituents on occasion
Advertising:
- Provide advice for and write advertisements, including for outdoor advertising, digital advertising, and print advertising
Desired skills and qualifications
Education:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a related field
Experience in at least one of the following fields:
- Media relations, public relations, or journalism
- Politics, including political communications, policy, or otherwise
- Social media, including the creation of vertical video content
- Knowledge of the Kooyong electorate and community
Skills:
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills
- An understanding of social media and an ability to produce highly engaging content across major platforms
- Video editing skills, particularly for vertical videos on Instagram and TikTok
- An understanding of the traditional media landscape, including the key journalists and publications in political media.
- An ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
- Strong organisational and project management skills

- Ability to work collaboratively with a small team in a fast-paced environment
Employment conditions:
The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2020-23, noting a new Enterprise Agreement has been agreed to and is expected to take effect shortly. Current conditions include:
- A commencing salary between $71,245 and $83,179 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills
- An additional optional allowance, may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours or work
- An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable
An initial probationary period of three months will apply and may be subject to extension.
