The Organisation

The Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) represents approximately 35,000 members nationally and advocates for their members working in the rail and public transport industries across Australia. Steeped with historical significance, the union drives contemporary impact in the transport industry. The RTBU is a fast paced and energetic industry union, and the organisation delivers reliable, quality and professional services to their high density and well organised membership.

Benefits:

  • $130,000 - $150,000 + statutory superannuation (Base salary dependant on depth of expertise and knowledge)
  • Full-Time Permanent role - General Hours 8.30am – 5.00pm
  • 5 weeks annual leave & 13 RDO’s

The Role

Reporting directly into the Branch Secretary and leading a team of three Industrial Officers, you’ll be responsible for the provision of comprehensive industrial and legal advisory and demonstrated acumen for management of sophisticated industrial issues. Specifically, you will:

  • Provide comprehensive industrial and legal advice, advocacy, and represent RTBU members at the Fair Work Commission and other court/tribunal proceedings
  • Deliver strategic advice and conduct research to support campaigns and industrial matters
  • Lead enterprise agreement bargaining and negotiate individual and collective agreements
  • Liaise and coordinate with internal and external key stakeholders
  • Represent members in disciplinary matters, attend workplace meetings, participate in delegate development activities, and draft member communications on industrial matters
  • Provide guidance on internal governance requirements and occupational health & safety
  • Support the Branch Secretary and industrial team with ongoing industrial and legal assistance
  • Seamlessly transition between complex casework and hands on routine operational matters as required

Essential Selection Criteria

You’ll have worked in a senior industrial relations capacity with sound knowledge of IR legislation, and comprehensive understanding of the labour market. You offer developed research, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities and experienced at leading preparation and delivery at tribunals, courts and mediations. You are a natural people leader and are effective at stakeholder relationship management with a genuine desire to drive outcomes. Additionally, you possess:

  • Tertiary qualifications in law and/or industrial relations
  • Experience in industrial relations through work with unions or labour law firms
  • A commitment to unionism and advocacy for members
  • Work collaboratively within a dynamic, fast paced team
  • Ability to obtain a Right of Entry Permit
