The Opportunity

The Office for Women is a growing team seeking talented policy advisers and economists with an interest in driving Australia’s gender equality priorities with a strong evidence basis and advancing women’s safety, economic security and health and wellbeing at a national level. Our work is fast-paced and high-profile.

The roles are unique in their scope, with the opportunity to work across and bring together a broad suite of policy areas and portfolios, including social services, housing, health, education, employment, business and industry, Indigenous affairs, environment and climate, and migration. We work collaboratively with other agencies and departments to build capability across the Australian Public Service in gender impact analysis at all stages of policy development and evaluation.

We are committed to celebrating wins together, supporting ongoing learning and development, providing a supportive and compassionate workplace, and can provide flexible working arrangements, including remote working opportunities.

Generalist Stream

There are multiple opportunities available for policy advisers across our three teams:

  • The Women’s Economic Security Branch influences and supports policies and programs supporting women’s workforce participation and leadership, women’s skills development, closing the gender pay and retirement income gap, and giving women more choice and flexibility around work and care.
  • The Safety and International Branch shapes policies and programs to address and prevent violence against women and children, including the National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022–32, and sexual harassment in the workplace.
  • The Programs and Engagement Branch administers the Women’s Leadership and Development Program, working with organisations to deliver projects supporting Australian women, and partnering with the National Women’s Alliances to ensure women’s voices are heard in the policymaking process. The Branch also shapes policies and programs to improve women’s health and wellbeing.

Economist Stream

Opportunities are available at all levels for economists in the Women’s Economic Security Branch. The Branch provides advice to Government to improve Australia’s productivity, competitiveness and equity.

Economists will have the opportunity to apply their subject matter expertise to complex public policy issues, and build capability in and understanding of economics across the Office for Women.

This process will be used to create a merit list for future vacancies.
