About the role

As Director, First Nations Strategy and Outcomes, you will play a pivotal leadership role in shaping and embedding First Nations perspectives across the organisation. Reporting to the Executive Director, you will provide strategic advice to the BSL Board and Executive Team, drive key deliverables under the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), and ensure culturally competent practice across all programs and services.

You will lead the First Nations Strategy and Outcomes Portfolio, overseeing governance, engagement, and implementation of strategic initiatives, including the First Nations Employment Strategy and First Nations Cultural Safety Framework. This role also holds responsibility for managing high-level stakeholder relationships and supporting BSL’s broader strategic goals through inclusive, culturally safe practices.

About you

You are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person with a strong record of strategic leadership and meaningful engagement with communities. You are deeply committed to self-determination, reconciliation, and embedding culturally safe practices in complex organisational environments.

Bringing cultural authority, strong interpersonal skills, and a collaborative leadership style, you are adept at navigating complex stakeholder landscapes. Your deep cultural knowledge, combined with operational and strategic expertise, positions you to lead with integrity and impact.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Proven leadership experience in a senior management or strategic advisory role, ideally within a community, government or not-for-profit context.
  • Demonstrated expertise in First Nations affairs, including a strong understanding of the social, cultural, and historical factors impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to build trust and credibility with Elders, Traditional Owners, government bodies, and community partners.
  • Track record of developing and delivering strategic plans, including successful implementation of RAPs and employment strategies.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills across diverse teams, executives, and Boards.
  • Qualifications in social policy, community development, public administration or a relevant field, or equivalent experience.
  • Personal integrity and cultural leadership, with a demonstrated commitment to cultural safety, equity, and inclusion.
