The Women’s Homelessness Prevention Service (WHPS) is part of PIAC’s Homeless Persons’ Legal Service (HPLS). It provides specialist, holistic support to women including trans and gender diverse women. It particularly seeks to reach victim-survivors of domestic and family violence who:

  • are at risk of being evicted, homeless, and/or facing other barriers to accessing and maintaining safe and stable housing and/or
  • have been policed or charged with criminal offences.

Reporting to the Principal Solicitor HPLS, the Senior Solicitor WHPS manages the service, supervising a Case Worker, Paralegal and pro bono solicitors, and the operation of WHPS clinics. Your work will include helping women understand and assert their rights as tenants, applying for protection orders, making referrals for family law support and assisting with financial matters. You will also:

  • monitor the impact of the WHPS to achieve its outcomes
  • conduct regular reviews of WHPS civil files
  • promote awareness of the work of WHPS
  • identify and seek solutions to systemic issues for women experiencing homelessness.

You are a senior solicitor with experience relevant to the WHPS practice, eligible for a practicing certificate in NSW, and with an awareness of legal issues and barriers facing victims of domestic and family violence or sexual assault and/or who are experiencing homelessness. Additionally, you:

  • have experience supervising members of a legal team, providing training and legal education
  • have ability to proactively manage risk, including WHS risks, legal practice and ethical issues
  • can provide accurate and appropriate legal assistance and manage relationships with clients
  • have capacity to identify and develop innovative legal strategies to impact on homelessness
