Hospitality - Education Support Worker - Malmsbury

Parkville College
  • Full time fixed-term role (until September 2022)
  • Ed Support Level 1 - Range 2

about us

Parkville College is a multi-campus college spanning Parkville Youth Justice Precinct, Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct, and the Secure Welfare units in Maribyrnong and Ascot Vale.

Parkville College is a registered specialist school that delivers senior secondary certificates for all children and young people detained in the custody of the Department of Justice and Community Safety, and the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.

The college delivers education to, and in the best interest of, some of Victoria's most vulnerable, yet inspiring young people who are filled with enormous potential. The Parkville College education model incorporates strong local partnerships to deliver a flexible range of educational opportunities including VCAL and VET, in addition to the provision of holistic support to meet well-being needs and rehabilitative goals. In recognition of the custodial environment and existing educational disadvantage, the school program includes weekends and term breaks, to enhance the learning opportunities for the children and young people in custody and secure services.

This vacancy is located at our Malmsbury campus and includes Saturday and School Holiday work.

about the role

A position exists for an individual with Hospitality Qualifications to work as an Education Support staff member. The role requires unorthodox school hours, in a unique school setting within the Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct. This position requires a teacher's aid to work with students in a therapeutic manner, on residential units within Parkville College. That is to say that this position is designed so that the successful candidate can perform outreach on the residential units of students and undertake hospitality based classes as a therapeutic outlet, distinct from academic classes within the school timetable.

The successful candidate will need to have a thorough understanding of the multiple and complex needs and issues of children and youth in custody. Further to this the successful candidate will need to demonstrate outstanding professional relationships with the Department Justice and Community Safety staff members, who work within the residential units. Finally, the successful candidate will need to have knowledge and expertise in the relevant subject field and ability to coach, in order to engage and develop marginalised and sometimes resistant learners. The successful candidate will also need to follow a trauma-informed and consistent approach with school educators while working outside of the traditional classroom setting.

The Hospitality - Education Support Worker:

  • Performs and/or supervises tasks that are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice and school policy. This may include the supervision and coordination of other education support class staff within the work area or educational program. Supervision and coordination would be limited to ensuring routine tasks are performed to required standards. Input into identifying training needs and development of education support class staff within the work area or educational program becomes an important feature at range 2.
  • Provides specialised support to achieve specific outcomes as a feature of range 2. Typically this will involve accountability for a single function, (e.g. ensuring data is properly maintained) or the operation of a work area (e.g. managing the day to day operation of a school office) under the direction of the principal or another senior manager.
  • Provides support to teachers and students that is beyond the routine support provided at education support class Level 1, range 1. Within an educational program assists teachers with the coordination of the support function, such as directing/organising the work of other support staff or providing a specialist support role.
  • Undertakes medical intervention support tasks or other specialised student/teacher support roles that require specific training that must be updated from time to time. The role is for a specific purpose for which there will be direct accountability as opposed to support roles that are carried out by a range of staff performing routine tasks under direction.
  • Performs technical tasks that require a sound knowledge of basic technical and/or scientific principles that are used to develop and adapt work methods and make judgements where there are clear guidelines and limited options. Routine technical support in libraries, science and information technology laboratories would be typical examples.

Note: An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee's position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrate the ability to manage work priorities, schedule time, and support an effective Hospitality program.
  • Parkville College is guided by an evidence based culturally responsive pedagogy. Provide an example from your experience that demonstrates your understanding and implementation of cultural responsiveness.
