Orygen delivers cutting-edge research, policy development, innovative clinical services, and evidence-based training and education for the mental health workforce to ensure that there is continuous improvement in the treatments and care provided to young people experiencing mental ill-health.  Our workforce is diverse and includes:

• Five headspace centres in Craigieburn, Glenroy, Melton, Sunshine and Werribee that deliver primary clinical services to young people and are operated by Orygen;
• The Centre for Youth Mental Health, a University of Melbourne research and teaching department that is wholly seconded into Orygen; and
• Orygen Youth Health, a tertiary clinical service that is operated by North West Mental Health, co-located with us at Parkville and Sunshine, who works in close partnership with us.

The role & your impact

As part of the multidisciplinary team, you will provide focussed psychological strategies tailored to meet the individual needs of young people aged 12-25 years within a community based mental health care setting, and funded through the Better Access to Mental Health Initiative (Medicare), and where appropriate, Targeted Psychological Services (TPS, previously ATAPS). Responsibilities will also include assessment and crisis responses, clinical interventions, and clinical processes. 

You will provide:

1. Assessment & Crisis Responses:
   • Provision and documentation of mental health assessments, including completion of mental state examination, case formulations, relapse prevention plans and individual treatment planning.
   • Provision of risk assessments and development and implementation of appropriate crisis response and safety plans.
2. Clinical Interventions:
   • Provide the allocated amount of sessions of focused psychological strategies to young people, under the Better Access to Mental Health Care Initiative, as referred as part of a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan or under under the Better Access to Mental Health Initiative (Medicare), and as referred under the Access to Allied Psychological Services Program (TPS).
   • Working with young people, their families/significant others and relevant service systems to respond appropriately to their mental health and developmental needs.
   • Provision of evidence-based psychological and psychosocial therapeutic interventions that promote recovery for the young person and their family, and are compliant with the Better Access to Mental Health & TPS Guidelines.
   • Consultation, liaison and linkage with internal and external service systems to provide a full range of tailored interventions for young people.
   • Developing, implementing and evaluating appropriate treatment plans for each young person, in collaboration with young people, families and members of the multidisciplinary team.
   • To be responsible for coordinating comprehensive care to a young person and their family/significant others which promotes recovery and to maintain the normal functional trajectory of the young person, while maintaining support and family/community links.
3. Clinical processes:
   • Participation in the regular intake meetings, clinical review meeting and providing comprehensive presentations of young people for treatment planning.
   • Provide written documentation to referring GPs, as required to be compliant with Medicare & TPS conditions and comply with headspace policies and procedures.
   • Comply with data collection as required under Medicare, TPS and headspace Policies and Procedures.
   • Participation in regular supervision, professional development and commitment to the continued development of clinical skills and evidence based best practice.
   • Practice according to the Better Access to Mental Health Care, TPS and headspace program philosophy, standards, guidelines and protocols; attendance and active participation in team meetings, along with any data collection or outcome measurements or any other duties as directed.

About you

Essential to this role and to be successful:

• Clinical Psychologists
  1. A degree in Psychology or Social Science (Honours, Graduate Diploma) from an accredited tertiary institution and a Masters or Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology. 
  2. Full registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Clinical Psychologist with a current annual practicing certificate is mandatory. 

• General / Registered Psychologists
  1. A degree in Psychology or Social Science (Honours, Graduate Diploma) from an accredited tertiary institution.
  2. Full registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Psychologist with a current annual practicing certificate is mandatory. 

• Registered as an eligible provider with Medicare (or eligible for full registration).
• Knowledge, experience, understanding and passion for the health and wellbeing of young people.
• Sound knowledge of and demonstrated experience in clinical practice and therapeutic interventions within the mental health field, ideally with young people experiencing mental health disorders and in particular, clinical risk management.
• Demonstrated ability to provide high quality assessment and evidence-based psychological interventions, within a stress-vulnerability and recovery framework for young people.
• Sound knowledge and understanding of mental health disorders including the developmental stages of young people and the impact that this has on their development and the impact on the family/significant others.
• Awareness of relevant legislation/policies and issues informing health and other services for young people and families.
• Demonstrated commitment to clinical supervision, education, training and ongoing professional development.
