The Opportunity

Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) is currently seeking a new Director Mental Health, Drug & Alcohol (Director MHDA) to join their team. As an executive leader within the District, the Director MHDA will provide strategic oversight, development and coordination across Mental Health and Drug & Alcohol services District-wide. Working within a well-funded directorate, a key focus of the role will be leading co-designed service models with consumers, as well as the enhancement of services to best meet the needs of local people.

Reporting to the Chief Executive and leading a team of nine direct reports and 300 staff, the Director MHDA will be joining an established and high performing team. With a mandate from the Chief Executive and Board, there is ample opportunity to look at innovative models of care to further enhance consumer experience and outcomes across both inpatient and community services.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing leadership, mentoring and guidance as an executive leader.
  • Leading the design and delivery of both new and existing services in alignment with MLHD’s strategic direction and action plan.
  • Fostering a culture that promotes evidence-based, clinical best-practice and continuing professional development.
  • Proactive identification and implementation of community partnership opportunities.
  • Financial management and accountability of services within the portfolio.

About You

For this appointment, we are seeking a senior leader with a track record overseeing the strategic and operational delivery of a service portfolio within a complex, geographically dispersed and customer centred setting. An established understanding of Mental Health, Drug & Alcohol services across state and federal jurisdictions is essential.

In addition, you will have:

  • Gravitas, and the resilience to operate as a senior Executive Leader.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage with multiple stakeholders at all levels to deliver on organisational goals and priorities.
  • Strong relationship management skills, with an ability to work collaboratively, influence and negotiate, particularly at a community level.
  • A track record of optimising business outcomes and managing reform and change.A visible leadership style and willingness to travel across the District.

Familiarity of NSW Health and the NSW Premier’s key focus areas as it relates to the portfolio is highly regarded.

Ideally, this role will be based in Wagga Wagga or the broader Murrumbidgee District. Alternative options may be considered for the right candidate who is willing to meet the needs of the District on the ground.

The Organisation

Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) spans 125,243 square kilometres across southern New South Wales, stretching from the Snowy Mountains in the east to the plains of Hillston in the northwest and all the way along the Victorian border. A team of 5,000 healthcare staff working across 33 hospitals and 12 primary health care centres deliver care services to communities large and small.

They are supported by hundreds of volunteers.
