ABOUT THE ORGANISATION
Caretakers Cottage provides crisis accommodation to homeless young people in the Sydney Eastern/South Eastern Suburbs. We have been providing crisis intervention services, accommodation services and outreach support services to young people and their families within the local area for the past 40 years.
Options Youth Support is the transitional accommodation program of Caretakers Cottage. Options assists young people aged 16-25 years to build the skills and confidence to live independently within a 2-year period. Options has a strong focus on working towards long term independence from the social welfare system.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Options Youth Support is an SHS provider aimed toward young people who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. The Options case worker supports young people residing in our properties to develop positive pathways towards independence with a particular focus on living skills, budgeting, employment, education and training outcomes. Through individual case management and development of independent living skills and community connections, the case worker supports vulnerable young people through the transition from dependence to independence through individualised case management.
DUTIES
Client Support
- Provide high quality, individualised case management support to young people during their stay at Options, and provide ongoing post program support as required
- Develop, maintain and support a personal development goal plan in partnership with the young person, which addresses identified needs such as mental health support, employment and education/training
- Assess the suitability and eligibility of referred clients and make appropriate recommendations for other interventions and referrals as required
- Convene and attend house meetings to ensure development of workable relationships between young people and the development of living skills
- Advocate for clients to community agencies such as Centrelink, Housing NSW, mental health supports, education/employment providers
- Actively maintain contact with young people in the program as appropriate
- Liaise effectively with referrers, service providers and/or family and carers to ensure best service and outcome for the young person
Administration
- Ensuring compliance use of systems including data systems, client systems, finance systems and others
- Development of own work plan to ensure job performance expectations are being met
SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential
- Tertiary qualifications in Youth Work, Social Work or Community Welfare
- Demonstrated experience, knowledge and skills relating to current issues, trends and programs relating to young people with complex needs
- High level of demonstrated experience working within a case management framework
- Ability to work autonomously and within a small team
- Able to be self-motivated, show initiative, and demonstrate high level time management skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge and/or experience working with clients experiencing complex trauma
- Successful candidates MUST have a current and valid NSW Working with Children Check and current NSW driver's license prior to commencing employment
Desirable
- Experience working to the NSW Youth Work Code of Ethics
- Experience applying the principles of assertive case work
- Experience delivering independent living skills programs
