WHAT IS THE ANTI-DISCRIMINATION COMMISSION?
The Northern Territory Anti-Discrimination Commission promotes equal opportunity for all Territorians.
Established in 1993, we aim to eliminate discrimination from happening by raising awareness about individual’s rights and responsibilities under the Northern Territory Anti-Discrimination Act 1992.
The Anti-Discrimination Commission has three main roles: Public education and training, handling complaints and community engagement.
The suitable candidate will possess personal values and be committed to working towards the objectives of the Anti-Discrimination Commission and the Anti-Discrimination Act, 1992 (the act). They will possess the necessary personal qualities to conduct this type of work.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Direct and guide the complaint-handling, conciliation, training and administrative operations of the Commission, including developing policy and practices, training and mentoring staff.
- Receive, assess, research, investigate, prepare submissions and advise the Commissioner in relation to matters of policy pertaining to the Commission.
- Act as Solicitor for the Anti-Discrimination Commission and intervene in matters before the Northern Territory Civil and Administrative Tribunal, and appear in appeal and judicial review proceedings.
- Provide advice to the Commissioner, public and private sector organisations, individuals and staff on anti-discrimination law, policy and practice.
- Manage, supervise and direct the complaint team in dealing with enquiries, complaints and the complaint process.
- Oversee staff and manage the organisation and business planning processes.
- Act as the officer for Freedom of Information reviews for the Commission.
- Act as Deputy to the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner including acting Commissioner when necessary.
Selection criteria
Essential
- Substantial experience and demonstrated high-level skills in policy analysis, developing submissions and advice and implementing reforms
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to manage, lead and motivate staff to achieve strategic outcomes for the Commission.
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills including the preparation of complex legal advice, memorandums, reports and correspondence and an ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
- Substantial experience in complaint handling, alternative dispute resolution, investigations and quasi-judicial hearing processes. 5. Admission to practice law in the NT and extensive legal experience in the practice of anti-discrimination and relevant administrative law.
- Extensive experience in management at an executive level including supervision of senior staff.
Desirable
- Training and experience in conciliation or alternative dispute resolution procedures.
- Knowledge and understanding of the Community Visitor Program.
- Training as an Information Officer and understanding of the Information Act.
