About the Association

The New South Wales Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) is the registered union for all nurses and midwives in NSW. The Association represents the industrial interests of nurses and midwives employed in NSW in the public, private, aged care and primary healthcare sectors. Our role is to protect the interests of nurses, midwives and the nursing and midwifery professions.

About the team

The Public Health Organising (PHO) team is a multi-disciplinary team composed of organisers, industrial officers and campaign support staff. PHO exists to develop membership, leadership and sustainable union structures in the Public Health System. We campaign with members for ratios, better pay and other improvements to members’ working lives, by combining local organising and industrial enforcement and sector-wide campaigns.

About the role

You will be working for a highly respected association and one of the strongest and largest unions nationally. We have a successful track record of being a strong advocate for our members which is evident by our year-on-year membership growth.

This is a full-time permanent opportunity for an experienced Industrial Officer to play a critical role in advancing the union’s mission. You will lead the industrial, technical, and representative aspects of organising campaigns, focusing on empowering member leaders and strengthening workplace power in areas identified as strategic priorities.

As an Industrial Officer, you will directly contribute to the Association’s strategy of building member power by:

• Organising high-density, action-focused member-led networks.
• Supporting and developing member leaders to drive collective action.
• Facilitating campaigns that deliver meaningful wins for members.

Key Accountabilities

• Lead and support campaigns aligned with the Strategic Plan, including Public Health System Award negotiations.
• Provide industrial advice and representation in negotiations and disputes.
• Prepare and present matters in industrial tribunals.
• Develop innovative claims and strategies for Award improvements.
• Contribute to member communications and organisational policy development.
• Provide professional leadership and guidance to Organisers on industrial issues.

About your experience

We’re looking for someone who brings a combination of relevant qualifications, practical experience, and strong skills to succeed in this role:

Essential

• Demonstrated commitment to the trade union movement and advancement of nurses and midwives.
• Thorough knowledge of industrial relations legislation and practices.
• Experience in collective agreement negotiations and tribunal advocacy.
• Strong negotiation, advocacy, and representation skills.
• Ability to manage complex issues, prioritise work, and exercise sound judgment.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• High-level research and analytical skills.
• Flexibility to meet deadlines under pressure.
• Ability to provide professional leadership and work effectively in a team.
• Proficiency in Word, Excel, email, and internet research.
• Current driver’s licence (Class 1A).

Desirable

• Relevant tertiary qualifications in industrial relations, law, arts, or social sciences.
• Experience as an Organiser, industrial research officer, or employment/IR lawyer.
• Prior experience in the trade union movement.
