ABOUT NSWCCL

The NSW Council for Civil Liberties (NSWCCL) was established in 1963 as an independent not-for-profit member organisation committed to protecting civil liberties and human rights in Australia. We are a secular and politically non-partisan organisation.

We engage with a wide range of civil liberties and human rights issues within NSW and at a national level.

Our main work is done through policy advocacy and campaigns to influence community views and government policies and laws. NSWCCL also responds to complaints from the public on civil liberties related issues. As a member organisation, our work is largely done by volunteers, led by an elected Committee (equivalent to a board of directors).

THE ROLE

NSWCCL is looking for a person to provide operational leadership in strengthening NSWCCL’s profile and advocacy capability.

This position was created to strengthen our ability to respond to an increasing volume of challenges to civil liberties and rights in Australia. It is an exciting and challenging position.

You will be responsible for supporting the Convenors and the Committee in the day to day running of the organisation.

This will include:

  • Onboarding, Mobilising and enhancing the engagement of our members and supporters on civil liberties campaigns;
  • Providing campaign and advocacy leadership and strategy;
  • Developing and executing agreed operational tasks or plans – including fundraising events and forums and regular communications with members and supporters;
  • Managing a small team of interns and volunteers;
  • Facilitating policy development on civil liberties issues and government relations in consultation with Action Group Convenors;
  • Development of media releases and public statements on key issues;
  • Monitoring and administration of submissions;
  • Letters to Ministers;
  • Management of website and branding;
  • Management of comms (social media, newsletters, mail outs);
  • Overall responsibility for and administration of the NSWCCL Office function;
  • Development and maintenance of organisational policies and procedures;
  • Coordinate and manage meetings (AGM, Committee) and provide backup for minutes, preparation of papers as required; and
  • Any other reasonable tasks as required.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

  • A strong commitment to the protection of civil liberties and human rights in NSW and Australia, and objective, non-partisan and secular advocacy;
  • An ability to lead and build a diverse group of volunteers and organisations collaboratively;
  • An ability to manage stakeholder and pro bono relationships;
  • Well developed research and law reform advocacy skills;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with limited supervision and sound judgement to support the volunteer Committee and sub-committees (Action Groups);
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills when communicating to diverse audiences, including across traditional media and social media platforms;
  • Ability to manage and supervise a small team of administrative staff;
  • Ability to fundraise, organise and project manage events and public forums and organise crowdfund campaigns;
  • Commitment to administrative tasks, and Microsoft Office skills;
  • Experience with Nationbuilder;
  • Experience with website maintenance; and
  • Sound knowledge of the Australian legal and/or political landscape.

Desirable:

  • Post qualification experience working in community advocacy;
  • Experience as a community organiser and campaigner;
  • Experience in drafting quality submissions and bold and accurate public statements on civil liberties and human rights issues under time pressure;
  • Ability to design marketing collateral for events, campaigns or newsletters;
  • Developed leadership and management skills; and
  • Experience working in the legal sector.

DETAILS

Location: Sydney based. Ability to work effectively remotely will be necessary.

Hours of Work: We are looking for a 0.8 FTE staff member, but we will consider 0.6 FTE. Monthly Committee meetings are out of hours and some additional flexibility with hours would be preferred but not essential (time-in-lieu is available).

Term: The position is for a 12-month fixed term, which may be renewed subject to funding. The appointment is subject to a three-month probationary period.

Supervisor: Secretary or other designated volunteer executive member of NSWCCL. This position also reports directly to the Committee.
