Overall purpose of program

The Public Affairs and Media Division is responsible for the organisation’s profile building, stakeholder communications, government relations and advocacy. The team ensures that the organisation can further its mission, and that our profile and reputation is enhanced and grows. The team is responsible for informing and driving health policy aligned with the organisation’s mission to prevent stroke, save lives, and enhance recovery. These efforts position Stroke Foundation as the voice of stroke in Australia.

Overall purpose of position

Reporting to the National Manager Public Affairs and Media and working closely with other members of the Public Affairs and Media Team, the Policy and Advocacy Officer will support the delivery of the Stroke Foundation’s public affairs, advocacy, and government relations activities.

This includes:

  • Undertaking research, writing briefing materials and campaign communications.
  • Maintaining key stakeholder databases.
  • Working with advocates and our lived experience community.

Key responsibilities

  • Support implementation of an integrated advocacy plan to engage the community and key stakeholders (internal and external) in the organisation’s mission.
  • Collaborate with Stroke Foundation’s Marketing and Digital teams to develop activities, website updates and create digital and multimedia collateral to support agreed campaigns and programs.
  • Support the development and delivery of Stroke Foundation events/activities where appropriate, including the development of briefing materials and speaking notes.
  • Conduct background research to inform the development of policy papers, submissions and briefs.
  • Draft correspondence and respond to enquiries.
  • Assist with the development of campaign communications and materials and other administration requirements.
  • Data entry and maintaining stakeholder records and databases.
  • Undertake other relevant tasks and duties as directed by the National Manager Public Affairs.

Your background, skills, and experience

Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualifications in health policy, public health, health or related disciplines.

Skills:

  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to write clear and concise reports, briefs, and presentations.
  • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills. Highly developed administration skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office suite (Outlook 360, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams); Sharepoint; and video/tele-conferencing platforms.
  • Ability to anticipate and respond to emerging issues.
  • Commitment to ethical conduct and professional integrity.
  • Ability to work in a team or independently.
  • Highly motivated with strong initiative and self-management skills.

Experience:

  • Experience in the development of health policies, position statements and briefing papers.
  • Experience in data collection, analysis, and interpretation of complex policy issues.
  • Project support experience.
  • Knowledge of the Australian government, non-profit and health system structures is desirable.
  • Experience using CRM tools/databases is desirable.
