We are the Adnyamathanha (ad-nya-mut-na) people. “Adnya” means “rock” and “matha” means “group” or “group of people”. Our people used to roam throughout this country from the Northern Flinders South to Port Augusta and as far east as Broken Hill. When pastoral leases were established our people were forced to camp together and travel less. Five tribes then came together the Kuyani, Wailpi, Yadliaura, Pilatapa and Pangkala.
Twenty-five years ago Nepabunna was successful in starting the first IPA at Nantawarrina. The station property was degraded and we were able to take over management. With the help of the IPA programme, and using our knowledge, we were able to restore the land. Ever since, things have been improving there, for the flora and fauna. We are proud of that.
Nipapanha Community Aboriginal Community (NCAC) body responsible for the management of all governance, programs and services at the community of Nepabunna in South Australia. Nepabunna is nestled in the picturesque northern Flinders Ranges region, 65km east of Leigh Creek on Adnyamathanha traditional lands. NCAC also manages the 58,000ha Nantawarrina, Australia’s first officially declared IPA.
NCAC is seeking an experienced applicant to fill the role of Land Management Coordinator. This position supports the Indigenous Rangers in natural and cultural resource management activities undertaken on the Nantawarrina IPA situated in the Nepabunna Community traditional homelands of the Adnyamathanha people.
The Australian Government supports the NCAC landowners through the Nantawarrina IPA and Working on our Yarta in the Northern Flinders Ranges of SA (Rangers) Activities. Funding is provided to NCAC to manage these activities including the protection, conservation and management of environmental and cultural values and threats, natural and cultural resource management, including Indigenous knowledge transfer, and protection of species.
