The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) is the national peak body representing 143 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs). ACCHOs deliver comprehensive primary health care to more than half of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples nationally. As an act of self-determination, these services attend to all matters affecting health and wellbeing spanning transformative community empowerment through to individual health treatments and continuity of care.
NACCHO’s work is focused on supporting the work of ACCHOs and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people overall through negotiating and advocating with Governments on health care policies and programs and systems reform. These issues range in variety from chronic disease management, preventative health strategies, telehealth, mental health and social and emotional well-being, listing of Medical Benefits Scheme (MBS) to the social and cultural determinants of health.
NACCHO’s partnerships with governments and non-government organisations include: The National Disability Insurance Agency, Department of Social Services, Department of Health, National Mental Health Commission, Vision Australia, Royal College of General Practitioners and Gaya Dhuwi. These partnerships greatly contribute to significantly enhancing the quality and accessibility of health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
It is a very interesting and transformative time across the health sector. NACCHO has been driving systems reform in the context of the recent signing of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. In addition, NACCHO is developing a grants commissioning capacity and broader programs portfolio targeted to directing government funds straight to ACCHOs in order to improve the health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
The Policy and Program Officer will work on a range of policy areas including:
NACCHO are contracted to deliver a number of new program areas that will help build the capacity of our member ACCHOs. NACCHO has a new project in collaboration with Vision 2020 Australia to gain a deeper understanding of what communities across the country see as priorities within the eye and vision space to develop strategies to help progress these. The Policy and Program Officer will be responsible for the program management of this project in collaboration with Vision 2020 Australia and will also be responsible for working with ACCHOs in the prioritisation of capacity building activities.
It is not essential the person has experience in the health or eye and vision sector, but they will have the skills to quickly gain the knowledge and the agility to work across issues in a short time frame. If not having worked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people they will have an understanding and awareness of their history, culture and health and other issues affecting them.
We are seeking a motivated individual with:
Tertiary qualifications in project management, policy, or related field.
Demonstrated experience in policy development, program management, analysis review and/or implementation.
The successful applicant will be required to undergo a Police Check and Working with Vulnerable People Clearance.
