The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency Ltd (NAAJA) provides legal assistance and justice services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Northern Territory. We have offices in Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. We are recognised as a leading legal service and have received national and local human rights and crime prevention awards for our work.
Position Overview
Under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, all Australian Governments and the Coalition of Peaks have agreed to establish Justice Policy Partnerships (JPP) at the national and state and territory levels to progress the commitment to reduce the incarceration rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and young people.
The Justice Policy Partnership Policy Officer will play a lead role supporting the establishment of the JPP in the Northern Territory. Working closely with NAAJA's executive team, Aboriginal community-controlled organizations, NT Government agencies and justice sector stakeholders, the position will provide high level, strategic policy advice and secretariat support to further the objectives of the JPP.
DUTIES
- Establish mechanisms for identifying policy issues of concern to Aboriginal people, communities and community-controlled organisations across the NT to enable input into the work of the JPP.
- Collate, analyse and present data and research to inform JPP agreed priorities and monitor progress of work, including from NAAJA's Client Management System.
- Recommend and assess Indigenous justice research projects for the JPP.
- Work closely with counterparts at Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, non- government organisations and NT Government agencies that are contributing to the work of the
- JPP, including through coordinating working groups and progressing priority areas of work as agreed by JPP members.
- Provide secretariat support to JPP members, including preparing agendas, meeting papers and taking minutes.
- Provide input to the development of NAAJA's policy platform, business and strategic planning and reporting as required.
- Other related duties as required by the Chief Executive Officer.
SELECTION CRITERIA
- Knowledge and demonstrated understanding of the current legislation, policies and practices driving the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the criminal justice system.
- Highly developed organisational skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively priorities work and manage competing demands.
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills and the ability to prepare reports, submissions and discussion papers in a timely manner.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a team and collaborate effectively in partnerships with key stakeholders.
- Competent use of word processing and email software.
- A current NT Working with Children Card and a current NT driver license.
- Satisfactory criminal history check and no history of disqualification from employment by a legal practice.
