About NAAFLS

NAAFLS (North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Service) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and the only victim-based Aboriginal legal service in the Top End. We provide culturally safe legal assistance and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victim-survivors of domestic, family, and sexual violence across more than 40 remote communities.

We’re entering a new and exciting phase — taking on responsibility for the Miyalk Domestic and Family Violence Shelter (MDFVS) in Nhulunbuy. As our Transition Officer, you’ll play a pivotal role in guiding this change.

About the Role

You’ll lead and coordinate the end-to-end transition of the Miyalk Shelter into NAAFLS’ operational management, working closely with the Safehouse Manager, our Therapeutic Lead, and key partners including the Department of Children and Families (DCF). This role offers a unique opportunity to blend project management, cultural integrity, and sector knowledge to ensure a smooth, respectful, and impactful transition.

Whether you’re based in Darwin or Nhulunbuy, you’ll regularly travel to the Shelter to support community engagement, staff alignment, and the delivery of safe and responsive services for women and children.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the full transition process in partnership with the Safehouse Manager and DCF.
  • Develop and deliver a detailed transition plan, with clear milestones and risk management.
  • Support alignment of Safehouse operations with NAAFLS’ governance, systems, and values.
  • Build and maintain respectful relationships with staff, stakeholders, and Aboriginal communities.
  • Support recruitment, induction, and staff engagement across the service.
  • Ensure cultural safety, trauma-informed practice, and operational readiness at all stages.
  • Provide timely briefings, progress reports, and stakeholder communications.

What You’ll Bring

Essential

  • Proven experience in project or change management, ideally in the community or legal sector.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, especially with government and Aboriginal communities.
  • Experience in an Aboriginal organisation or family violence service.
  • Sound knowledge of governance, policy, and service delivery frameworks.
  • Deep commitment to trauma-informed, culturally safe, and strengths-based practice.
  • Excellent time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Awareness of the unique challenges facing Aboriginal women in remote NT communities.
  • Willingness to travel and work flexibly to support service needs.
  • NT Ochre Card (Working with Children Clearance) and National Police Check (or ability to obtain).

Desirable

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background.
  • Qualifications in project management, social work, or community development.
  • Experience living or working in East Arnhem or other remote NT regions.
