About the job

The Bigiswun (“adolescent” in Kimberley Kriol) Social and Emotional Wellbeing Service (SEWB) is a new service that offers integrated support for mental health and cultural, social, and emotional wellbeing for young people aged 17-25 years. It situates health, mental health, and wellbeing from a holistic, interconnected, and strengths-based perspective and centres Aboriginal knowledge systems as the source of healing. The Bigiswun SEWB team will deliver wrap around care through two-way teams to ensure culture is always considered. Additionally, the team will integrate the impact of early life trauma, prenatal alcohol exposure and other factors on neurodevelopment when supporting young people. Clinical supervision and capacity building will be provided as well as linkage with a network of SEWB teams across the region.

This position will be based in the central office located in Fitzroy Crossing. This position will work in the centre, and may also require work in outstations, communities and ‘on country’.

What does a typical day at MWRC look like for a SEWB practitioner?

The Youth SEWB Practitioner is a varied and responsive role that provides wraparound supports for young people living in the Fitzroy Valley. You will work directly with young person to identify needs, set goals, and develop client care plans to improve social and emotional wellbeing. The Youth SEWB Practitioner will conduct brief evidence-based assessments for triaging and support. It also will include supporting the Young Person to breaking down barriers (e.g., supporting the Young Person to access services and facilitating medical and governmental appointments). This position will co-facilitate activities such as yarning groups, cultural trips and other events identified by the community. Clinical supervision and cultural support will be provided. The male identified position will primarily work with young people who identify as male. This position adheres to all MWRC policies and procedures, relevant national standards, and professional codes of conduct. Accommodation will be provided as part of this role.

You’ll probably learn how to do much of this over a “yarn and a feed”, or while throwing a fishing line at the river.
