MWRC is seeking to appoint a suitably experienced Paralegal to its ‘Strengthening Families’ team. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, this role will support the provision of legal support services. You will work flexibly and collaboratively alongside a small legal team, counsellor/art therapist, family support and social workers and the women’s shelter staff to increase women’s safety. You will be part of a multidisciplinary group that works together to provide wrap-around support for families experiencing family and domestic violence.
You are purpose-driven with a demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, the rights and interests of First Nations people. You’re able to connect and enable others to connect. You’re an advocate for change who is flexible, open, and adaptable. You’re inquisitive, creative and a clear thinker. You are compassionate and listen deeply. You know your strengths and recognise your limitations. Working within a healing framework and trauma aware workplace, you are committed to decolonising your own approach and work practices.
You are an efficient administrator with experience that preferably includes one or more of the following areas:
You understand working in WA context, and preferably have some experience supporting regional/remote/very remote community settings.
No two days are the same and this isn’t your usual legal role. The role is part of a close-knit multidisciplinary team delivering a holistic family centric service. In addition to supporting legal representation and support to clients, the role also requires you to work alongside professionals from non-legal fields that deliver assistance in the areas of social work support, trauma informed counselling and Indigenous-led support in communities.
You will support the provision of culturally informed, trauma-aware legal services to women and families across the Fitzroy Crossing and surrounding communities in the Fitzroy Valley region. You’ll contribute to the identification of community legal education priorities and the development of outreach & education programs. You might participate in community networks and build/maintain relationships with referring agencies, key organisations, community leaders and local people relevant to legal issues.
You’ll probably learn how to do much of this over a “yarn and a feed” , or while throwing a fishing line at the river.
