About the Role

As the Director and Principal Lawyer of Moonee Valley Legal Service, you will partner closely with the Board of Management, staff, volunteers, and key stakeholders to shape and execute MVLS’s vision, mission, and strategic plan. You will be responsible for ensuring robust governance, operational excellence, financial sustainability, and an inclusive, high-performing culture that reflects our commitment to social justice and community empowerment.

Key Responsibilities

You will lead a multidisciplinary team of lawyers, social workers, community development and administration staff to deliver integrated legal and social services to the local community. Key responsibilities of the role include:

• Providing visionary strategic leadership aligned with MVLS’s mission and values
• Ensuring operational excellence across the organisation including legal practice, integrated services, partnerships, and service delivery
• Exercise strong governance, including risk and compliance oversight
• Lead advocacy and representation on issues affecting clients and community
• Build and maintain effective stakeholder engagement with community partners, government, and sector peers
• Promote strong staff engagement and nurture a collaborative, inclusive organisational culture
• Work closely with the Board to inform governance and strategic planning
• Foster a positive and high-performing team environment

Skills & Experience

You are an experienced leader with a strong commitment to social justice and equity, ideally gained within the community legal, not-for-profit, government or social impact sectors. Your collaborative leadership style is matched by your ability to drive strategic growth and foster a culture of innovation and care.

You will bring:

• Proven experience leading multidisciplinary teams in a legal or community service setting

• A current Victorian Principal Lawyer Practising Certificate
• A strong understanding of community legal practice, with the ability to manage risk and support legal compliance
• Demonstrated experience in change management, project delivery, and continuous service improvement
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain strategic partnerships
