About the position
APN Ranger Coordinators play a key role in enabling the Wik and Kugu APN Ranger Crew to deliver the biodiversity conservation and fire management for carbon abatement programmes Wik people's homelands south of the Archer River in Cape York.
The APN rangers implement; modern and traditional fire management including fire fighting; terrestrial and marine threatened habitat and species monitoring and conservation; feral animals and weeds eradication; species and habitat baseline and monitoring surveys; flying drones; GIS mapping; data entry and management; remote vehicle and vessel maintenance; and remote ranger facilities maintenance and upkeep.
We are looking for a steady and resilient individual with excellent behavioural management skills with a broad range of professional and life experience including in remote Indigenous Australia.
Essential
- Experience working in remote Aboriginal communities and operating daily in cross-cultural contexts.
- Experience working for a community development or not-for-profit organisation.
- Experience in coaching and mentoring Indigenous teams and support up-skilling and capacity building of local staff into coordination roles.
- Experience and accredited competencies in at least one of the following areas: conservation and land management; agriculture and/or horticulture and/or permaculture; heavy and light vehicle trade mechanic; training and development; outdoor recreation and education; and community development.
- Ability to lead teams and support up-skilling of local Rangers including into senior and coordination roles.
- Physically fit and able to work outdoors in difficult and remote environments, and travel to remote locations that may require you to camp for several days.
- A good understanding of contemporary land management in Northern Australia.
- Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Current Drivers Licence and Boat Licence.
- Current First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain one.
- Current National Police Clearance.
- Working with Children Blue Card or the ability to obtain one.
Desirable
- A mixture of two or more of the identified experience and accredited competencies listed above.
- Experience and ability in building good work teams and culture in adaptive environments.
- Experience in environmental baseline monitoring and data collection and management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and GIS.
- Proficiency with flying drones and data capture equipment.
- A current firearms licence or the ability to obtain one.
- Ability to drive and recover 4WD and other vehicles.
- Strong understanding of Work Place Health & Safety for remote conservation and land management.
- Willingness to continue professional development in areas that will support APN programme delivery.

Location and Delivery
This position is based in Aurukun and Indigenous homelands south of the Archer River.
This position is open to local and non-local candidates. Successful non-local candidates will be provided with single-person or couple accommodation in Aurukun.
This position also includes:
- Subsidised accommodation in Aurukun for a single person or a couple;
- When on country, staff-accommodation on-site or camping;
- 4 weeks annual leave with 17.5% loading & 10% Superannuation; and
- The option to salary sacrifice.
