Responsibilities of your role

Reporting to the General Counsel, this newly created role will predominantly focus on MSF Australia and MSF New Zealand’s compliance work, but will include legal advice and transaction work as well. Since its inception in 2022, the Legal Regulatory & Compliance department has continued to expand, and you will be a key contributor to its growth and functional implementation across the whole of business structure for both entities. Accountabilities will include:

Compliance & Legal (incl Privacy)

  • Proactively oversee all compliance activities for MSF Australia and MSF New Zealand; and maintain/critically assess compliance frameworks;
  • Thorough understanding of relevant laws, regulations and/or ISOs;
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of emerging law, regulations & standards likely to impact on the NFP sector compliance space;
  • Assist General Counsel with advising all business departments (written and oral); and take ownership of delegates legal tasks from complex to unique;
  • Triage legal queries, draft memoranda on points of law and regulation and undertake relevant legal research; assist with contracts register management;
  • Develop & build relationships with pro bono legal firms and MSF Paris.

Insurance, Contracts & Policies

  • Broad understanding of insurance law, offer assistance with management & periodic review of the coverage portfolio, & ability to build relationships with brokers;
  • Assist with contracts, MOU’s, NDA’s, contract lifecycle management and timetable planning;
  • Ensure contract management in line with policy;
  • ensure internal policies are updated;
  • Draft legal updates, provide employee training and monitor procedures.

What you will bring

To be successful in this compliance-focused role you will be known for your resilience and tenacity, detail orientation, a natural ability to inspire others and an interest in contributing to humanitarian aid work globally. Ideally you can demonstrate the following:

  • Either a current Australian legal practicing certificate (NSW registration required) and up to 3 years’ experience in a comparable role; OR equivalent practical training in contract drafting and management, workplace law, and non-profit law, where you are in the final stage of your studies to gain admission;
  • Significant experience with regulatory and compliance tasks;
  • Ability to build and maintain excellent internal and external relationships across all levels;
  • Demonstrated ability to plan workload strategically, problem solve; and negotiate;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas in a clear and concise manner.
